Will an OMEX rev limiter damage my engine at all?

Featured Replies

I have a Mk6 ford fiesta (pre-facelift) i was thinking about getting an OMEX rev limiter for my car but I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for, and ive spoken to some people about them, and been told that the OMEX system will damage my engine. At the moment, the only modification ive done to the car is put a de-resinated hornet exhaust on, but still have the CAT. Would appreciate any advice. Thankyou

Forgive my ignorance but doesn't the car already have a rev limiter?

I assumed all modern cars have it built in. if not then they would not be able to limit the revs in limp mode. the other type of rev limiter is your right foot

Lol...we can tell the age gap in this thread!  The OMEX rev limiter allows you to make pops and bangs from the exhaust to upset all your neighbours!

It'll wreck your cat so you'd need to remove that, however the engines are pretty robust on the ST (you don't say it's an ST but I really hope it's not a 1.25! ).  Of course there is a limit though, and yes some do eventually break with pop and crackle maps...

Can I safely do an Italian tuneup on my car by going to the rev limiter without damaging the engine? 😂

You can, but there's really no point going anywhere near the limiter in a diesel as all the torque is midrange!

So what's the point in calling it a rev limiter if it doesn't limit the revs.

"Omex annoying git master" they  should call it.

I think it's more to try and get pops and flames from the exhaust. Someone I know with the mk6 fiesta celebration model fitted this on the car and after a bit the cat was smoking.

@TomsFocus what about the Peugeot 107 I might get 😂? I accidentally bounced at red line a few times in it when getting used to the clutch

Yes that appears to be the purpose of it according to others, my point was why call it a rev limiter if it doesn't limit the revs. Might as well call it anything random like the Omex Flange thruster if you aren't going to describe what it does.

The 107 will love bouncing off the limiter, they don't make peak power until about 6k!!

You can set the limiter above the OE limiter to give you a bit more power...that was the original purpose before every 17 year old wanted their Fiesta to sound like explosive diarrhea...

It's also the hard cut limiter that gives you bangs, compared to the soft cut limiter most cars have as standard.

Well with most power/torque curve graphs I've seen on road cars the peak power and torque is usually well under the standard redline limit. That would suggest that unless you are also changing other aspects of the engine e.g cam profiles etc.. then you are not likely to gain any power from increasing the revs. Just more engine wear.

Might be worth investing in a powerful speaker pointing reward and recording someone else's pops and bangs and playing them back  at the touch of a button. Would certainly reduce your fuel bill and engine wear/potential damage.

:D, my first tough was like, who would want to fit rev limiter to a Ford Fiesta to a 1.4 or something engine 😄 It's a bit like getting a massive wing to it.

I believe my exhaust has a slight leak, and it sounds quite sporty when doing low revs, I would better suggest drill some holes in the exhaust😄

I read some stats and I believe my Fiesta mk6 1.4 ztec peak power is around 3k range, mighty beast 😄

Torque is generally fairly midrange nowadays but power doesn't tail off until much higher up on NA petrols.  It does depend on the car of course.

OMEX do also do proper standalone ECUs for if you wanted to add cams tbf.

I helped fit one to a mates track car, along with Jenvey individual throttle bodies.  It didn't increase power by much but it does sound amazing!
