Focus Mk3 Multiple warning lights

Featured Replies

Hey everyone

Complete noob over here. I've had a 2011 Focus Mk3 2.0 TDCi Auto for around 18 months. Been serviced at Ford its whole life (I believe).

We haven't driven it much in the last month or so, given the state of lockdown in the country. Its last service was towards the end of January this year.

At the last service, Ford recommended that I change the transmission fluid as a precaution - not because anything was wrong (their words), but I decided to delay that after further advice from other Ford service centres.

Now, I went to the shops to top up on some groceries and a whole bunch of warning lights came on. Tyre pressure monitoring fault, ABS fault, traction control fault, self-parking assist malfunction, hill start assist.

I've tried googling but it is tricky, given that it is a lot to look for, it seems. Tyre pressure is fine.

Anyone got any ideas? Surely it can't all be related to the auto transmission?

Given the state of the country right now, it's not going to get in to a dealer. Luckily we don't need to go anywhere 🙂 So I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do / check for in order to remedy in the interim?

Thanks!

All of those are linked by ABS, rather than transmission.

It might just be because your battery is getting a bit low.  Or a bit of damp has got in to one of the sensor plugs.  It's unlikely to be anything major though.

That makes me happier 👍

Definitely worth getting your battery checked.

I reckon we'll be getting quite a few similar posts of this nature as we use our cars less. A low battery charge causes so many random errors. Maybe it's an ideal time to purchase a charger for your workshop and keep it regularly topped up. You don't want to 'need' your car in an emergency and find you're stuck for the sake of a few missing volts!

My own charger of choice is the Maypole 7423 after trying a few others. It has a lovely feature in that if you suffer a power cut, it will automatically go back into charge mode when power is resumed. Most will need a manual restart which is useless if you have left your car on charge and gone on holiday! Also, the whole screen is backlit red on charge, and turns green when cooked. I have wasted alot of money on chargers in the past but it was all worth it on finding this...

When my battery died on my MK3, I got some strange error messages as well. I’d say check that first as a precaution, then look at ABS sensors.

Thanks so much, everyone. Appreciate the input 🙂

I had that happen also on my old Mk2 when the battery aged .

Stay safe y'all 💪 👍

Hey folks

Had a new battery put in - the old one was indeed struggling.

Warning lights persist, however. And the front windows no longer go up / down automatically - that's new.

Had the warning lights checked through the OBD, but they couldn't be cleared.

So, before I get the car to a workshop, anything else I could check myself?

Thanks!

You’ll need to reset the windows, instructions on the manual. Not sure on the warning lights, did you get any DTC’s when you plugged it in?

I did, yeah. If I remember correctly it was Code 1 or 2 for the items that had issues - ABS, stability control, parking aid, cruise control. I forget which ones were code 1 or code 2.

And the front doors.

Oh, and the tyre deflation warning light.

If that makes any difference at this stage

They're all ABS related as mentioned at the start of this thread.  You need to have Ford specific diagnostics done on it - Forscan is ideal.  It's likely to be an ABS sensor fault but that won't be picked up by a generic OBD scanner.  Fault codes are usually a letter and 4 numbers...P2450 for example.

Aha. Right, will do some more digging.

Once again, thanks for the help guys

I've just had exactly the same set of warning lights on mine. Forscan identified the problem as a wheel speed sensor and told me which one (rear left in my case). Sensor changed, problem solved.

Are there sensors in the rear wheels with drum brakes too?

Yeah, they work in the same way.  Fitted through the drum backplate.

Having the same issue with my mk3 2.0 derv titanium x est after replacing the discs and pads all round, been back to the garage several times I even thought they put on wrong parts but they say its definitely correct. So, tyre pressure fault, traction control, abs, hill start assist, and cruise control all lit up

They've probably broken one of the sensors or damaged the wiring.

Short answer is I don't know.  They might not be too expensive at a Ford dealer so could be worth an ask.  Ebay is where I buy most parts from but that can be hit & miss.  Then you've got ECP, carparts4less, Jayar, MPD, MisterAuto, AutoDoc and numerous other motorfactors both online and in store.

I'm not sure that just replacing them all is the most economical solution though.  I'd recommend either getting more thorough diags on it (such as Forscan), or having a better visual look yourself, or at a different garage.
