MK3 Fiesta Diesel Pump Adjustment

Featured Replies

So my Bosch VE gave up on me, and I managed to find a new one. Problem is that I can't find the spec to calibrate it with a dial indicator.

Anyone have a guess?

It seems most ppl here have all the new fiestas from MK 7 up. Do some good dig on this forum, I have found good helpful topics on this forum that are about 10 years old, when the MK6 was fairly new car.

Well, I did find a few posts about valve adjustment, some small modifications, but nothing in terms of adjusting the plunger on the VE Pump.

I'm really not sure if I'm on the right track. Last time we adjusted it to 0.92mm which was the spec for a MK2 Fiesta, but I guess it makes it a fog machine with no throttle response (you can turn the throttle but it just makes a mess.) Wouldn't recommend, almost made it a runaway.😂

Right now we got it adjusted to 1.4mm which is the spec from an old Land Rover, and it works. Still smokes quite a bit. If it helps, the part code is - 0 460 494 218 VE R299.

Not a lot of places around here that still offer to work on these old pumps.

@bashbarnard Knows his way around VE pumps so might be able offer some advice.

I'll send him a PM and see if he can help out. Thanks for the info!

You could say I know a bit. [emoji23] However. Your proper adjustment isn't something I'm able to help with. I still build mechanical ves for various power builds. But they're for power. Setting one up standard isn't something I'm used to. Is it a semi ECU one? Or is it one that has an actual throttle cable?

An actual throttle cable😄 To be more specific I guess - It's a 1990 Endura DE series engine. (Non-turbo one with the mighty 60hp -give or take a few from the last 30 years.) Found a pic that matches what my pump looks like. Most manuals indicate that i need to take a 9.5 mm drill bit and stick it in to the side where the belt sits and a 6mm drill bit on the cam gear. That takes care of the most but I cant seem to find the fine adjustment. If I take my dial indicator it goes from 0.65-1.2mm. Gives it a bit of wiggle room.

And so we're on the same page I colored the bolt, where the dial indicator should go. (Not the same pump, just an idea😅)

Something I forgot to mention is that it had an EGR delete many years ago. Not sure how it would affect how the pump should be adjusted now.

The easiest thing to do is time it up as normal. A few mm either way seriously won't matter. I put all mine on by ear. Never used a dial gauge. It should be good to go. When you say fine adjustment. What do you mean how advanced or retarded the pump is or how long the infection duration is?

By fine adjustment I mean measuring the lift of the plunger. Lets say when you get the pump off it has a moment where there is no lift, meaning there's no force needed to turn it. And as soon as the cam starts to lift it - that's the measurement I need. How much I have no idea. Not sure if I'm allowed YouTube links, but

What specifically do you need the measurement for though. Unless you're rebuilding or calibrating the pump it never changes. How you got a fault with it?

If I place the belt gear pins where they should be It just keeps making a mess. I did mentioned previously "it makes it a fog machine with no throttle response (you can turn the throttle but it just makes a mess."😅 It doesn't change the rpm, it just sits at what sounds like 2.5k/1min. (Got no tac on it) Could be the fact that the pin that goes in the pump has a lot of wiggle room. My guess is someone before me had a hard time adjusting it and just made the hole wider which would kind of explain why my indicator shows readings ranging from

Had the same problem a while ago and I had a local farmer take a look at it, and he adjusted it to 1.4mm of lift. We adjusted the pump and right now we set it to the same setting. He just made a guess, he didn't have a clue what was the spec.😂 It works, but I can't get it to pass emissions.

All I need is an idea as to what it could be.

I really do hope I don't sound like a jackass on this forum.😅

Sounds like you've got bigger problems than just that adjusemt. Does it hang at 2.5 k or does it not rev past 2.5 k. The smoke what colour. White or black?

Guess you were right. Governor spring was stuck. Looked perfect from the outside but the pump was sitting so long at the wreckers it rusted on the inside. The diesel that came out of it was like dark apple cider with crunchy bits of what was the cam plate - so yea, it clogged itself shut in the end. Took the old pump and changed the fuel delivery valves and just cleaned the pump in general. Adjusted the timing to 1.54mm and it seems to work fine ... for now.

Any Bosch ve that hasn't ran in any amount of time is junk unless it's been stored 100 percent correctly. Has to be full of diesel. Didn't realise it was a second hand pump. [emoji23] I never used to store mine full of diesel long term either. Used to I'll em with 10-40 then seal completely. You get a little air in em they'll rust in an instance.
