Mk7 Gear keeps neutraling

Featured Replies

Hi all, first post but had a search and cant see anything specfic for my issue. Fiesta 2008 (58) MK7 1.6 Zetec S manual.

Private purchase about 2 months ago. Noticed a bit of clutch slippage but 'sold as seen' so got me on that. Paid for the clutch assembly to be replaced (full job inc slave cylinder and gearbox oil top-up). Drove it nicely for a couple of days (50 miles approx) to bed the clutch in.
My issue - On one occasion before the clutch change and 4 times in the last couple of days since the change two weeks ago, I go to engage 1st or 3rd gear and it seems to go in smoothly (no resistance) only when I release the clutch pedal and accelerate, it revs like it's in neutral or not found the gear.

1st gear is changing down from 2nd, I cant get 1st but disengaging and then re-engaging 1st again seems to work. I can engage it fine from standing start.

3rd gear happens under acceleration at 3.5 - 4k .. 2nd to 3rd, feels like it's in but again revs. I HAVE to change to 2nd or 4th to get it to select a gear.
Neither issue has happened often but concerning given its just a new LUK clutch!

Any suggestions appreciated. TIA

Ok so an update on this. Drove the car yesterday and was changing gear fine. Changed down to 1st from 2nd and it engaged the gear and then the gear stick went 'floppy'. Stuck in 1st. Clutch engages and disengages absolutely fine (as you would expect as it's new) and car drives great but only in one gear. I cant get reverse either.
The gear stick just moves around the gear gator/ assembly.. quite freely, no gates to go into. With clutch engaged and driving, I can move the gear stick around the full travel of the gear area.

Is the issue my gear shift / link cable, from the gear lever to engine?

Hoping someone can confirm?

Thanks

Fixed the issue. It was the gear selector cable (from gear stick to gearbox). Took the plastic gear cable cover off, which is located front passenger wheel side looking at the front of the car, and sure enough the forward gear cable was sheared off.
Purchased an aftermarket gear shift cable for £50 and then spent 7 hours with my brother removing old one and fitting the new one back in. Its a b**th of a job to do because of the way the cable runs through the centre of main cabin unfder the console, out of the firewall right where the exhaust heatshield and mainfold is and then between the engine and battery.
If I had to do it again I'd strip the bottom of the console out as the the cabin filter box is right over the hole/plate for the cable and there is really no room to maneuver.
