MK4 1.5 petrol 1st service cost...

Featured Replies

I pick my car up tomorrow and they've already tried to sell me a service plan, over 3 years it works out to £783.79 (or very handily *just* 72p per day), it doesn't include the MOTs but they do say they'll (very generously 🙄) discount the first 2 MOTs to £25!

As it is the 1.5 petrol it only needs servicing 2 yearly or 18k, the car is 11 months old with 3k on the clock which means on their plan I'll get two services which works out to £391 per service, that seems rather extortionate, when I asked the service manager what the current cost of the 1st service is she was very cagy and said well as they're 2 yearly all the services are classified as major so your looking at £400!

Really, are Fords that expensive to service, surely the first one is just oil, plugs and filters with an inspection?

No service automatically includes an oil change.  That goes off the oil life counter.  1st year service is convenience check that renews the breakdown cover.    2 yr service at our local dealer is around £260.

This service plan they've quoted me for specifically covers just the 18k and 36k services, so year 2 and year 4, that's it, no convenience checks nothing.

So you save £9 a service on the service plan?

Plugs and air filter won't be done until 36k.  I'm struggling to see how they can justify £400 for an 18k service. Must be one expensive pollen filter!

All the "services" (not convenience checks) include an oil change.

The oil life counter is just an indicator to tell you if you should get the oil changed sooner than the next service.

My mum has just had a "major" service on her Kuga. £310 including MOT and brake fluid at a Ford dealer. So £400 just for a major service is a rip off.

She just gave me the monthly prices for the service plan, when I asked her what the total was and did a quick bit of maths to come to £390 for each service I looked a bit incredulous. So when I asked what the individual prices were she did a bit of typing and clearly made the figure up and the fact that because they're 2 yearly they're major services.

I'm baffled by the prices this dealer quotes, the car itself took some haggling to get to where I was happy to be, they clearly make most of their profit on all the add-ons. £600 for extra 2 year warranty, £400 for GAP, £379 for wheel and tyre, £399 for paint protection, now £780 for service pack. I've said no to every one they've offered so bless them for their persistence 😂 Those prices are rock solid fixed too, even when I said I could get GAP for £140, wheel and tyre insurance for £199 they refused to budge on price.

I will admit it is 18 years since I bought a car from a main dealer and the experience has changed a massive amount.

Needless to say I shall not be going back for any servicing work.

Just called the closest dealer that is on the participating list on the Ford website, their current prices are:

£240 for the 1st service (18k, year 2)

£319 for the 2nd service (36k, year 4)

That sounds more reasonable!

You're right about profit on extra's though, there's very little profit on purchase prices nowadays so I'm surprised you were able to haggle much off tbh.  Profit generally comes from finance, insurances, and service plans.

Ah cool didn't realise that.

One thing to remember when looking at service cost of a Ford, is that with each service you also get another year of Ford Assistance, which is basically AA Relay/Recovery.

The AA would charge you around £120 a year for it.

I was very sceptical about the Tyre and Wheel cover, but did go for it from my dealer at £299 for 3 years, but having claimed for a tire in the first year at £145 I'm felling a little better about it now.
