Major scrubbing/squeaking noise rear shocks

Featured Replies

For a while now, driving over humps and low curbs I have a loud noise in the rear shock area, quite irritating.

The rear shocks are probably OK, it is the dust covers that have come loose and are knocking and rubbing as they move up and down. I just changed the shocks on my mk6 fiesta because of this and did not order replacement dust covers. I found the old shocks were OK, but the dust cover yellow foam had broken up so the covers wobbled around.

I would replace the rear shocks and fit new dust covers, see picture of dust covers - black plastic tubes with yellow inserts. The yellow inserts were the parts that were worn and broken.

I refitted mine using some foam cut to shape to hold it in place. The new shocks where a little better.

You could just cut a piece of round foam the same size as the dust cover and make a hole in it and a cut. Then jack the wheel up and push it onto the metal pole of the shock and slide it up under the dust cover to stop it wobbling. This will stop the noise.

Also, check the rear spring coils at the back near the socks. The rear coil spring might be rubbing on the metal base, causing knocking rubbing noises. Try rubbing some grease over the spring where it rubs against the metal base. The picture shows the rear coil spring and shock. There is no signs of rubbing on this one.

Could even be a broken spring, or stone stuck in the bottom of the spring. Had stone stuck in daughter's fiesta making noise and broken spring in my partner's fiesta.

Thank you everyone, I have already had the shocks replaced and the noise is still there, I have been looking at dust cover replacements so you’ve all confirmed it pretty much. Thanks again

I know exactly what it is! And you won't like it!

Have a read here! Not a hard job to do but takes some doing.
