Fiesta with km/h dial instead of mph

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm hoping somebody can help me a really weird situation!

I just bought an 08 Fiesta 1.25 Style. It has full service history with one owner from new.

It was bought from and has been fully serviced by my local Ford Dealers, right back to day 1 and its all certified and beyond doubt.

I bought it for my son as his first car.

What I didn't notice until we got it home is the Speedometer dial is a km/h dial, not an mph dial. But the car is clocking in miles on the digital clock.

This version is the old type with a dial and needle, not digital so essentially it would just be a matter of literally swapping the dial over.

I rang Ford and they want £550 to dismantle the whole dashboard so that's a non-starter.
I've found a company that sell the dials for £45.

Two questions

1. Why the hell has it got a km/h dial in the 1st place? The explanation is that it was a pre-reg purchase from new but where can it have come from? The owner was born & bred half a mile down the road and the car seemingly has never been driven outside of the town. Its only got 40k on it in 12 years!

2. Is it possible to get access to the dial without taking half the car apart?

I would be really appreciative of some help on this. It's not like it matters particularly but my son is a new driver so it's a bit confusing for him!

Also I've one eye on selling it on in the future. it just seems odd and I would have thought twice about buying if I'd spotted it!

Could have been originally registered in somewhere like Ireland that drives on the left but uses kilometers.

Or Japan.  It should be easy enough to change the dial it's what they do for grey imports.

As long as it's reading correctly i.e 100kmh is 62mph it's legal

Thanks chaps. It's a standard RH drive and the mileage is in miles which is what is confusing me.

Also, unclear if this is still a valid Regulation but if it is then it seems to be illegal!?

Has it only kph on the dial and not mph also. UK vehicle normally have mph on outside of dial and kph on inside of dial.

As for showing miles on the odometer that is changeable either way in the cluster

The instrument cluster should be easy enough to drop out in minutes .

If you pm me the reg number I should be able to see what it originaly should have had.

Yes, only km/h, no mph markings at all.

If its a dodgy car then my entire life instincts need recalibration, its just inconceivable!

It's come from a local garage with an excellent reputation, it has every piece of paperwork ever recorded (like an inch thick file!) right back to new and all through a main dealer.

I'm just speechless that a) that's how it is and b) I didn't spot it!!

Thank you Ian for your kind help, I've pm'd you just now
