Tapping/Knocking noise but not from engine

Featured Replies

Hi there, not long had this st150 and it's developed a worrying knocking noise. Doesn't make a peep out of gear or through the rev range out of gear, but then I accelerate or even cruise it has a knocking noise which sticking my head out of the window sounds like it's on the drivers side in the engine bay.  With the engine running and on the driveway there is no noise, had a mobile mechanic out and he said it's not rod knock which settled me a bit but still it is a worrying noise....it's just when i'm moving....i've used the search button and can't find a noise like it or nothing coming up on youtube.  It only seems to be heard when in gear...which when moving is hard to take a video of it without background noise...or i'd post a clip of it.

Any help guys, cheers.

Didn't the mobile mechanic suggest anything?

The gearboxes are a weak point on the ST's but I'd be more inclined to suggest a CV joint first.  They can sometimes only knock under load yet seem fine while coasting out of gear.

I would tend to agree with Tom in saying it's sounding like you have a CV joint on it's way out, very typical of your description. You say you have not had the car very long, if you bought it from a dealer then I would take it back and get them to sort it out.

I’ve also got an annoying knocking noise which then turns to a grinding noise, been in garage who have taken it out for test drive and course it didn’t make a peep so they won’t do anything as can’t pinpoint where the noise in describing is coming from 😞 it tends to be more when I’m doing a certain speed. I can’t record the sound as doesn’t have when stationary and engine running
