Ford focus mk1 boot electrical anomalies - rear defroster and light

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Here's a couple of things I'm trying to get my head around:

1) The defroster grid seems to only work when the boot is open.

-When it's open I measure 10V on all the grid lines so I would think the grid is ok. Shouldn't I be getting 12V though?-

-When it's shut I barely measure 0.15V at the same points using the same ground point of reference.

2) The boot light turns on when I beging to open the boot but if I lift it by more than a few inches it switches back off.

Wires are broke in the loom going into the hatch splice fresh wires in and it will be working again 👍

A common fault.
Sort the wires quickly before the boot lock solenoid and rear wiper pack up too.

At least on the Mk1 the boot can be opened with the key.

While investigating the wiring in the rubber trunking between the body and hatch it's worth checking the rear washer tubing because that will almost certainly have hardened and become brittle.

Thank you for your help

I took the rubber apart and wow, at least 3 wires are snapped and the rest brittle. Amazes me how anything is even working at all!

So I've found a whole replacement wiring in a 5 door focus (mine has 3, hope that's fine) in a much better/new state. I'm going to reinforce the weak spots with some electrical tape and see how it goes.

And you're right, the washer tubing in the other focus had snapped right in the middle of the rubber casing, can't imagine what a juicy mess it would be in mine...

Thanks again, I'll let you know how things go

The boot lock solenoid is a major symptom, when it happened to my mk1 the boot popped every time i hit the brakes due to shorting over from the third light.
The solenoid burned out and the lock mechanism needed replacing.
Easy enough job, you just need to know how to transfer the lock barrel over.

It’s been a while but it is now fixed! Thank you for your help

An important thing to know is that you should look at the reference number on the loom label which is situated behind the plastic panels where the boot light is. Do that first before you take everyhing apart like I did...

I had a loom I got from the scrapyard with a different reference number and the connector was different - and impossible to find mine anywhere on internet.

In the end I simply reconnected the snapped cables and taped up the bare ones and everything works again.
