is it time to replace tyres?

Featured Replies

Just had the car back from its mot with 4 advisories on tyres 5.2.3 (e)tyres worn close to legal limit / worn on edge the garage also carried out a courtesy safety check that lists all 4 tyres as 3mm 22% life remaining. Due to current restrictions i'm only doing approx 2.5k per year. so should i get the tyres changed or just keep an eye on them and leave it another year?

The garage has quoted £563.96 fully fitted 4 tyres goodyear ugrip perform 19550r16 which i think is a bit steep. looking online i can get kleber quadraxer 2 19550r16 excludes fitting for £320 for 4

I have attached a couple of pictures of the tyres as tbf I was surprised they were flagged up on the mot as they look good to me

From many tests I've seen 3mm is about the minimum you'd want to go. I think the UK legal limit is 1.6 mm across a certain percentage of the tyre.

But the wet weather braking and aquaplaning tests I've seen show a big performance drop off at below 3mm.

But if the tyres are otherwise in good condition another 2.5K miles on them is not going to take them significantly below 3mm (unless you drive like a boy racer)

Personally if I was only doing another 2.5K on them I'd keep them for another year.

Legally you're OK but if they were mine I'd get them changed.   The price that you've been quoted  is way over the top though.

DON'T pay £564 for 16" tyres!, I'd only be looking at £440 fitted for 18" Goodyear Eagle F1's for my ST (and I'd get £25 off that for 4).

goodyear ugrip perform 19550r16 ???   (Goodyear UltraGrip Performance???)

Looks like a Winter Tyre to me, makes them quite expensive but they are still over charging you £100.

A more mainstream Goodyear is the EfficientGrip Performance (I ran these on my last car, decent noise level and economy)
https://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/goodyear/efficientgrip-performance/195/50/R16/V/88/m?tyre=35832022
It's showing £420 fully fitted in my area.

yes i think so and after specifically asking for an all season quote they quote for a winter tyre. they did suggest going to asdatyres.co.uk or mytyre.co.uk to get the price down as they fit tyres from those websites.

I'm struggling to find any All Season tyres for that size, maybe that's why they quoted the Winter ones.

I wouldn't change those personally.  They'll still be legal after 2.5k and they've worn nice and evenly too...maybe the others have some edgewear?  I'd be so annoyed if I replaced them and got an irreparable puncture in a new one after 6 months.  If you were doing 10k+ then I'd say it was worth changing sooner as you'd get the benefit of them.

I'd be looking at around £100 fully fitted for that size if you are changing them.

I wouldn't bother with winter tyres. Not needed in this country. Just drive to the conditions and stick to the main roads when weather's bad. If you are worried about wear its better to have more tread on tyres especially in bad conditions. 3 points per bold tyre and its the only thing between you and the road. Personally never skimp on tyres this is a good indication on whether the car has been looked after by brand of tyre on car.

Totally agree. Its one area its not worth taking a risk.

Can't beat a good remould😗.....Do remoulds still exist ?

good for delaminating 😁

As others have said, Garages are well known for their upselling and overcharging.  That stunt was always pulled whenever I took my company car in for a service, they thought because I had a company car I didn't care about the cost, which maybe slightly true, but being ripped off is something I despise.

I used to use Online tire company called black circles, you put your reg in, choose your tyres, then make an appointment and arrange to take your car to the nearest black circles approved fitter.

Fantastic service and much much cheaper than these rip off merchants.

I would always go for a branded tyre tend to have better performance difference between stopping or having accident.

You can always find places selling branded tyres cheaper but if they use monkeys to fit them you can end up with more damage to your alloys (lacque removed) which you won't notice till corrosion sets in then cost more to repair wheels.

thanks everyone I'm leaning towards keeping them a bit longer but if one gets damaged then i will go ahead and replace all 4 with a quality all season tyre

currently have continental premium contact 2 fitted generally a good summer tyre however not all the tread is to full depth this is apparently to give a new tyre better stability/ rigidity but as it wares and the shallow tread disappears poor weather performance does deteriorate and because of this i don't recommend below is tread at 8mm vs 3mm

I'm surprised of the tire price you have in the UK !!

my fiesta is equipped with 15 inch tires, If I want to replace 4 tires with the best brand here , you name it , mechilin pirelli bridgestone continental or whatever reputable brand, it should cost me around 5000-6000 Egyptian pounds , that's about 240-290 british pounds for all four !!

Well I diss gree about winter tyres, as soon as the temp is below 7 c the tyres give better grip in all conditions braking distance is significantly reduced, up,here we get snow most winters  but it's even in the wet you feel the difference.

I think in a lot of European countries its a legal requirement to swap your tyres for winter ones when of course winter arrives

Yes, but those EU countries have harsh winters most winters so makes sense, whereas the UK can go several years before a period of servere winter weather hits the more populated areas of the UK so not worth the cost of 2 sets of tyres being changed around twice a year.

i personally would keep the tyes until the wear bars on the tire start showing that they are contacting the road, on most tyres the wear bars are around 2mm of tread left

If it was necessary it would be law like in other cold climates.I don't disagree that winter tyres are better in the winter hence the name. Just not required unless you live on a hill in Scotland/Wales.

Drive to the conditions and you won't have a problem in England. Is it worth £500 worth of tyres and a set of wheels for 25 days a year where temperatures will be lower than 7degC.

I’d agree with that. I used to put winter tyres on - about £280 for a set of 4 plus £80 each year to swap winter to summer and vice versa. We maybe had snow on one or two days where they did genuinely help out. At around 4-5 degrees, I don’t see a significant performance decrease of good quality summer tyres to warrant the cost in our climate anymore. If anything I feel that being that tiny bit more cautious does me more wonders than a set of winter treads 🙂

Remoulds do still exist and are commonly fitted to trucks, which is why you see so many tyre treads littering the verges of any motorway or dual carriageway.  Probably also explains why the traffic & travel lady on the radio every morning says "...and there's a lane closed on the A12 at moment while a lorry changes it's tyre".  Does she live in Pixars Cars movie!?  Or Cybertron from the Transformers?  Surely the truck is awaiting a tyre change by a person...winds me up before I've even got out of bed!

Regarding winter tyres, this is going to be totally dependant on the driver again - someone doing 30k a year and regularly driving up North, early morning, in winter will see far more of a benefit from them than those of us down South that don't drive far.  I will say that I do notice a big loss of grip below around 5c though, especially on a damp road, a bit of tyre slip when pulling away becomes much more frequent.

I think our dealers have a lot higher costs in rent / business rates VAT (20%) and the old tyres have to be recycyled.

I've made some enquiries and I am assured that Nottinghamshire Police do not fit winter tyres to their cars.

Would almost be cheaper to drive to Egypt and get the tyres there 🙂
