1.0L Ecoboost coolant leak

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, Nat here, couldnt find a Fiesta related thread about this issue, forgive me if there is one!

I'm after some advice and wondering if anyone can help

I bought a 2016 Ecoboost in Feb this year (used from an Evans Halshaw - didnt take the extra warranty), all fine until the other day when I saw steam/smoke coming from my engine as I pulled up at home, popped the bonnet to see a stream of fluid coming from the coolant inlet pipe - nightmare! (picture below)

Got my breakdown cover to tow to independent garage who looked at it and told me that the pipe is for the turbo, Ford have said you cant just replace the pipe and whole thing needs replacing (looking at £750 for all associated parts, labour + VAT as its a big job). He told me that I should contact Ford first as this should not happen on a 4 year old car, maybe if its 10+ years old, but to him theres definintely a fault.

Having seen many posts online since Googling the issue, it seems that there is a problem with 1.0L Ecoboost engines, however I cannot find any info to suggest that there's a recall in place for my reg (does this mean the repair may have already been carried out?). I contacted Ford customer relations, who did not want to divulge any info as to whether this is a fault that they would honour and repair, but who told me the first step is to get it assessed by a Ford approved garage before they can make a decision. I'm in the process of arranging for the car to get to them for assessment on Tuesday.

How likely to we think that Ford will replace this for free? I know I am out of warranty, but given that this seems to be a huge safety issue with many Ecoboost engines, surely theres evidence that this is a major problem and for them to replace it without charge

Anyone else had a similar experience with going to Ford, and could give me any advice on how to best proceed with this? Obviously don't want to fork out £750 if this is clearly a known fault - the mechanic I took my car to also said that the outlet is in similar condition and this is likely to need replacing too!

Its coolant, this was real time when I noticed the issue as I had my phone torch out to inspect!

The coolant is reddish orange one (not sure of the brand)

Update: Since posting I think the issue is similar to the one detailed in the link posted by cragrat, currently awaiting a response from Ford CRC but Ford garage where it's been inspected from have said its the coolant pipe for the turbo and requires a full replacement which is around £900 as they need to refit the whole lot!

You were luck to get away with that without blowing the engine.
