wrong fuel, petrol in deisel, can i use in tank pump to get it out?

Featured Replies

hello, so yes i put the wrong fuel in my 08 2 litre tdci deisel galaxy and drove for a bout a mile then it stalled. the tank was nearly empty i put 27 litres of petrol in. i can do a bit of automotive wok and have figured out i need to get the fuel out of the tank the hoses the filter and filter housing, i dont want to take the seats out and go through the top of the tank if i can avoid it, so can i use the in tank pump to move the fuel out by disconnecting the fuel line before the filter and draining into a can or would the lack of lubricant because its petrol in a deisel car damage the in tank pump? ive seen a couple of people doing this online and been told that the pump would be ok but im not certain and would like to be certain as i dont want to break the pump. also if it is the case that the lack of lubricity would damage the in tank fuel pump, would me adding the appropriate amount of self mixing 2 stroke oil to the petrol that is in the tank before moving it through the pump and out the hose be a good plan? also does anyone know what solenoid and where it is i would need to bypass for the in tank fuel pump?

thank you.

Petrol in a diesel is nastier than diesel in a petrol.
You have to consider accellerated engine & pump wear as a problem now as diesel cars rely on a certain amount of lubrication from the fuel.
Petrol would have stripped out this and good advice from a qualified diesel mechanic is strongly advised before you run the engine again.

hi thanks.

yes but it stalled as soon as the petrol made it to the engine, i turned it over a few times before i realised what i had done, but it definitely wasnt running on petrol, only went a mile or so too and it was driving fine, smooth as it always is, was residual deisel running it for sure. but i have now read lots of people with same experiences, nearly empty tank lots of petrol drove a mile or so stalled, and they drained the tank or had it drained cleared the lines cleared the filter housing changed filter and it was fine, like loads of people saying this, with no long term damage, and the wrong fuel expert i called who wants 200 pounds to fix it for me is going to do this very thing, i asked him, he doesnt even change the fuel filter. so im going to do it, i just need to get the petrol out, seems to me using the in tank pump would be ok but just wondering about lubrication needed or not? and id like to avoid the whole seat removal if i could as its parked on a busy road with that side id need to work on to get the seat out in traffic. but yes any more people with some experience would be welcome.

Is there an in tank pump on these?  If they use the 2.0 PSA derived engine they don't use a lift pump.

Also how much did you put in?  Just a tenners worth?  Or a full tank?

hi thank you,

i dont know what 2.0 psa derived engine is. mine is a 2008 2.0 tdci, is that what you mean or different?

there are in tank pumps for my make and model car, ive seen videos, photos, and i can buy one for the make and model car, but thats just it the ones i can buy are either petrol or deisel, not interchangeable but they look the same, pretty simple looking device.

i put 27 liters of petrol in a tank that had about 5 litres of deisel in it.

Galaxys aren't really my area so not 100% sure which engine they use.  Ford diesels from that era are generally made by PSA (Peugeot) and don't need an in tank pump.  What looks like a pump is actually just a pipe into the bottom of the tank and the fuel sender for the dash gauge.  Can you hear a pump whining when you switch just the ignition on?

27 litres of petrol is a lot to run through a diesel pump though, I'm not sure I'd risk it even if it's got a lift pump.

its the mk ll with a 2.0 litre duratorq tdci l4

There's more than one 2.0 TDCI fitted in the mid 2000's though, that's the problem.  The Mk1 Galaxys even used VW diesel engines but I doubt these ones did.  I'm almost certain this will be the DW10 PSA engine but will need someone else to confirm.

What about drawing the fuel up through the feed line at the filter by connecting a manual fuel transfer pump tightly to the hose? Would there be any thing stopping to flow from the tank?

That should be absolutely fine.

Yeah it worked great emptied the tank! 30 litres out via the feed line with a hand pump! Nice.

Now I'm going to change the filter drain the housing of petrol, put deisel in, put it all back together then draw the fuel up the line from the tank, also bleeding the air out, with the same hand pump attached to the fuel return line and hopefully all is well.

There was no petrol in the line that leads off of the fuel pump to the engine, empty, even when I put the pump on it, there was nothing to come out, so I'm thinking the engine got very little petrol as it shut off right away, and really hoping no long term damage. Will let you all know. Thanks for the input.

Yes I believe you were right about that, when I narrowed the search down to 2008 2.0 litre tdci the in tank pumps went away and was only feeder units left. So you're right there were different years within the same mk ll variant of the 2.0 litre tdci galaxy that appeared to have a in tank pump, 2010 was one, I saw a pump for those, but the 08 didn't have one, so something was different yes. But hey all the fuel came up through the line at the engine easily, was wonderful to see it working haha 🙂.

Will finish up today and let you all know how it's gone, hopefully well. thank you for the input. 👍

Glad to hear it's gone well so far.  I'm sure it'll be fine with fresh diesel, I have helped drain a few misfuels in the past but not done it myself...yet anyway!

Yes was the first time I've ever done it, felt pretty stupid, I was looking right at the unleaded writing I knew I was putting unleaded in, other things happening in my life and man I was preoccupied, there u go.

Alright thank you to everyone for their input. And if it ever happens to you well then there's hope and it may not always be a massive breakdown. 😁👍
