Mk2 Throttling At First Start

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I've had a topic with others about throttling at first start of the day--thinking--that different petrol (Shell, OMV etc.) is the cause of the issue. I've made some progress about this and got some more question and ideas what could it be? Previous topic:

Symptoms:

At the very first start up of the day the car throttles, coughs or even chokes.

It happens especially if the following day is much colder (let's say day time celsius is 15 and the following morning is 5)

What I've found:

If the clutch remains pushed in for about 15-20 seconds during start up the phenomenon won't happen.

When I release the clutch and the clutch disk joins the spinning part it gives a distinctive sound almost like a fractional or something like that.

Ideas:

  • Maybe the old transmission oil causes the issue?
  • Crank shaft sensor?
  • Timing belt?

I have 190 000km in the car and to my knowledge the transmission oil was never changed before.

This issue is not something I can't live with and its not happening every time, just interesting and I think its not healthy for the car either.

Plus a side question, is it normal that white "steam" comes out from the exhaust when reversing in cold and the engine is about 70C ?

Thanks guys!

not sure the way you worded things helps (but you may have discovered the problem - just don't realise) if its a conventional manual and the engine and systems are in generally acceptable health....,

starting in neutral the car struggles to run...

but starting in neutral, with your foot on the clutch it runs OK?

so start in neutral with your foot on the clutch, then quickly let the clutch out.... if it then starts struggling, the fault lies in the clutch being stuck on its input shaft and transferring drive "slightly" to the gearbox... if so, yes damp weather might make the problem a bit worse, and in the cold everything is finding life a bit harder till you notice it...

I like to sniff around and try things whether it makes any difference or not. I always start and leave the car in 1st gear. So when I start the engine the gear is in 1st then I push in the clutch then turn on the engine. I never leave the car in neutral, but I tried it today and nothing happened. I mean no struggle whatsoever. Maybe I just have to accept that my girl is getting old heh. By the way it hadn't happened for a month now.

because you correctly park in gear, I guess you never stuggle to get first...

if the clutch is becoming stuck to the imput shaft, you can get drag on one side of the clutch (with some drive trying to get through....) it can make it very difficult to get into first
