Type R to 2010/11 focus ST3?

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm considering buying a Mk2 ford focus ST3 to replace my current car.

I'm currently driving a 2011 honda civic type R FN2 with remap, exhaust manifold, full exhaust system, induction kit, cold air intake and an LSD. It goes like stink

However I am looking to move soon which will mean il be doing more town driving and less B road blasts hence the ford focus ST has caught my eye especially given the extra torque on tap

I was split between the Ford Focus ST & the Mazda 3 MPS,But I've read that the focus is the more polished product with better handling

Is there any common faults or preventative measures I should consider when looking at purchasing a 2010/2011 model

Any advice or info much appreciated

Thanks

The standard ST isn't very fast only being 220hp (good when they were released 15 years ago, but slow by todays standards). A few bolt on mods and you can easy gain over 300hp. So the question is really are you planning to modify it?

The only reason I went with my ST is the 5 cylinder, Volvo engine (plus the fact its so easy to modify). There aren't many cars you can get for this money that make a sound as good as a mk2 ST.

Like any performance car, they do come with their issues. The main ones being that the driveshafts are made from chocolate (listen out for clicking as you're driving next to buildings etc.). Genuine Ford shafts are the best replacements unfortunately (unless you're going to fork out nearly £1000 for a set of dreamscience ones).

Another problem are the cylinder liners cracking. This is more of an issue if you plan to modify it, but can happen on standard cars too. Its a new engine if they do crack lol. There is a "block mod" you can do where you shim the gaps inbetween the cylinders. It doesn't prevent it 100% but apparently does help 🤷‍♂️. Obviously its a head off job to complete so can cost over £600 to do (the shims themselves are only a tenner lol). A lot of people say the block mod has been done but haven't got proof. No proof means you have to assume it hasn't been done.

If you do get an ST, get an ST-3. The black, heated leathers make a world of difference to the look of the interior. Otherwise it looks a little dated inside (still better looking than the MPS).

Cheers for your reply luke.

I modify all my cars within reason so the ST3 would deffo be no exception.

Yeah I definitely like the sound of the 2.5 unit , I've always preferred engines that are 2.0litre +, did look at the MK3 focus ST3 but cost wise it's above what I'm looking to spend

I'm gonna try and seek out an example that is at least mapped & had the block mod, with proof as you mention

One last question, how do these ride on our treacherous road conditions?

Hi Jay, if you want to get loads of sensible technical info and guidance join this site - it is brilliant, you will get loads of replies and help straight away

You need membership to gain full access, which is £10, Most of the members say it is the best £10 they have ever spent (including myself, as I have owned 4 brand new Mk2 Focus ST225s)

Trust you are aware the ST3 is only a 4 seater, ST2 is a 5
