Focus mk2 estate Replacing OEM navigation unit with aftermarket one.

Featured Replies

Hi,

Earlier this year i bought a 2nd hand ford focus X-road. It's a special version of the ford focus mk2 facelift estate. it has all the options on it.
Yesterday, my navigation unit didn't boot upon starting the car. I went to the dealership and they told me it was dead. They could revise it for me but it would cost around €250.

However, with the unit i have now, i can't use the bluethoot to play usic, only calls. So i was wondering if i were better off ordering an aftermarket one with android auto.

I looked on this forum and found some nice topics on it. However, they still left me with some questions.

I saw these 2 radio's which seem really nice:

https://xtrons.co.uk/ford-focus-built-in-dsp-android-10-2gb-ram-16gb-rom-pst90faf

i was wondering when i install these, can i still use the music controls on my steering wheel?
I was also wondering about the time and date on my heads up display. it is controlled by the navigation unit right now, could i still change this when i have an aftermarket radio?

thank you,

RayanR

I fitted the top unit to my ST (I bought a black one though to match the carbon fibre effect fascia). Mine also came with an octa-core processor, 4gb of ram and 32gb of storage I believe. I'd definitely say you need those specs, mine does sometimes struggle when you have Google maps and music on at the same time.

You can Bluetooth stream music (like every other car nowadays) and make calls.

They should come with a canbus adapter so the steering wheel controls will still work (as will dimming of the screen when you turn the headlights on).

You should be able to adjust the clock on the instrument cluster? The android one runs independently from the car.

One downside to the one I bought is the screen is very "sunk in" compared to the fascia piece with the buttons on it. This makes it a little awkward to touch any of the screen along the edges without using the edge of your finger. It's not an issue when using DAB or Bluetooth music (designed for the head unit with bigger buttons). Just a little awkward when navigating stock android apps such as YouTube or Google maps.

Also worth noting these aren't Android Auto and won't run any of the auto apps. Imagine it like you've glued your Samsung galaxy tablet to the dashboard.

okay, i'll be going for the 9" version as i wan't to make my focus look more modern. I was also thinking of adding a reverse camera, as the 9" screen would make it awsome reversing into thight spaces. Is the boothandle of my ford focus 2.5 estate the same as a ford focus hatchback?

going by your experience, i'd go with the 4gb/64gb octacore version. I noticed that xtronics doesn't offer those, so i'm gonna buy a junsun on aliexpress. I also won't bother with the screen mirroring. As the car is already capable of running normal android apps, i might even just download spotify on it so i can use it without my phone. I looked into android auto and it doesn't look like i really need it if the head unit's already an android.

I would've gone for the larger screen myself, but like I said I have the carbon fibre effect dash and couldn't find a fascia that wasn't silver. It doesn't really matter what manufacturer you buy it off, they all seem to roll out of the same factory in china.

I never bothered trying to fit a reversing camera as I already have sensors (reversing cameras seem very gimmicky to me when they are fitted to anything other than a HGV).

well, i also have a special effect on my facia (as seen here). but i actually don't like it that much. So i'm ether gonna wrap it or gonna spray paint the other parts to match the new grey facia.

I also already have sensors, but sometimes it's hard to know where a certain small pole is. Also the kit i bought has it for "free", ie, i couldn't choose one without it, just like the 4g module which i'm probably not installing. I will see when i get it if i install it. i can always install it afterwards. I'm debating if i should go the extra mile then to hook it up to the parking sensors, so the screen doesn't switch if i have a trailer atatched to my car.
I do like to have a backup cam however, i once lend a car with a reverse camera, and it is actually really nice. We'll see in a week or two what i'l do 😛

I just installed the unit, it went pretty good. However, now when i lower the windows (as the driver), I need to hold the buttons. A short click doesn't keep them lowering. Same for going up.

Also, i'd like to hook up the aux and the USB in the armrest to the junsun head unit. The unit accepts a left and right audio signal and a normal USB-A. I opened up to see what connectors there were behind them, and saw that they weren't normal connectors, but "custom". does anyone know where these go and if it's possible to get an adapter for it?

Thnx
RR

I found this post on the forum about someone who did the same. So i ended up making a custom USB cable that fits and a custom aux plug. I'm gonna install them later this week and keep you posted
