Engine malfunction, non starter

Featured Replies

Hi I’ve got a 2008 2.0 diesel focus,

it came up engine malfunction and cut out and now won’t start, I’ve changed the battery as that was low on voltage but still have the following codes

U0140

u0001

U0073

U0121

P1934

U0131

U0155

Recovery driver said it’s a ECU failure and to scrap the car

Any help greatly received

It sounds more like the instrument cluster issue rather than an ECU fault. The solder joints are prone to cracking causing bad connections. It's a simple fix, an hour or two of your time if you have a soldering iron, or take it out and send it away to a company on ebay which will cost about £60.

Definitely worth a try before scrapping the car, the instrument cluster fault is very common on the mk2 Focus and can cause all sorts of wacky faults to appear.

Did you try clearing the  codes using a code reader?  If yes, which ones came back? If 'No' then try clearing them then see which ones come back.

Tried clearing the codes but failed to clear

now won’t start,

What are the exact symptoms. Is the Immobiliser LED flashing, if so try Googling PATS flash codes.

Any clicks or indications it is trying to start? Any odd dash displays & lights?

Simply saying it is ECU failure sounds like a wild guess to me. Those U codes could well be a simple bad connection or wiring failure problem. Simple that is if it can be found!

Have you looked at Forscan, it is the most poweful diagnostic system for Fords that you can get apart from the Ford IDS system, which is neither cheap nor readily available to individuals. The P1934 is a bit of an odd code, there seems to be no one simple definition of it.

It could be the Instrument Cluster, but the well documented IC failure mainly affects the Focus around the 2006 age, and failures outside this band are not particularly common.
