engine malfunction light on.

wife had a engine malfunction light come on when coming home from work.I called the aa out today and they found the following fault codes showing.

U2023+U2012+U2202+U1900+U0001+U0121+P1260.He suggested i take the car to a garage for further test.He did clear the codes and said give it a small run later on which i did and again engine malfunction light came on and when i went to switch off it took at least 4 attempts(stop/start button) .Is this a costly fix has i am not car savy to fix myself.

It could be a lot of different things, and diagnosing it could take quite a bit of time, it sounds like a bad connection somewhere, probably on a CAN bus. It could be a connector, in the wiring, or in an electronic module. Is the car a Mk3 Focus, & what engine (though it may not matter in this case). I am not sure if the 2010 focus on your profile is your wife's car or yours.

Thanks for the reply,we share the car.Its a 1.6 petrol.not sure what mk it is but looking at some pictures of dash i would guess a mk2.below is the picture of faults found by the AA.There is another picture with more faults but can only upload one at a time.Thank you for taking time to look into this for me.

At 2010 it will be a Mk2a, I was getting a bit muddled with all the dates. Mk3 came in in 2011.

U0140 comes up on Google as: Lost Communication With Body Control Module. U0121 is: Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System.

From the data at the top of the screen I would say that the reported errors are in the PCM (aka ECU or Engine Control Module). Thus the PCM is complaining that it can not talk to the ABS or BCM over the CAN bus. The immobiliser (PATS) relies on communication over the same bus between PCM and the Instrument Cluster (IC). The key is scanned by the IC, and the PCM checks over the bus for a valid key code. I would expect to see a PATS flash code 16 during times when the car is immobilised (will not even try to start).

The fact that the diagnostics can talk to the PCM, and those errors, suggest that the PCM (ECU) is working, at least partly.

I would not go near a Ford dealer, unless they were known to be well above average in honesty and competence. They normally just follow computerised procedure lists, replacing expensive parts or doing very time consuming point by point testing at high labour rates, at the customer's expense.

 A recommended auto electrician, or an independent garage known to be good with electrical faults would be ideal. But not easy to find!

I would suspect an intermittent connection problem in the HS-CAN bus first. This is not magic, it is just a twisted pair of wires that goes from the PCM (just in front of the passenger front wheel), to the IC, via a circuitous route covering a large part of the car. There are several connectors in that bus that have been known to be dodgy after a few years. The 2nd suspect would be the IC, as this terminates one end of the HS-CAN bus, and links it to the MS-CAN bus, which goes on the the BCM (Body Control Module, or GEM, part of the passenger fuse box.)

This information would be worth passing on to, or to use as a competence test for, a prospective repairer!

The full electrical schematic for the Mk2 Focus, including these buses and their connectors, is on this site, and talked about in many threads on it. I can post links if wanted.

 

This very much sounds like it could be the common instrument cluster fault. We seem to have had a couple of these on here recently.

Basically the soldered joints on the back of the instrument cluster are prone to cracking and creating a bad joint. It's a simple fix requiring just a soldering iron and an hour or two of your time to remove the cluster and strip it down. There's loads of videos on YouTube on how to do it and what you're looking for.

Alternatively there are quite a few companies online you can send the cluster to at around £60.
