MK 1 Auto 1.6 Tyre Speed Rating. H or V?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Looked everywhere, but can't find the speed rating for my 2004 Auto 1.6 Mk 1.

Car has 195/60/R15's  with both H and V fitted. Handbook just says according to engine size, but doesn't specify which.

Can anyone confirm the Mfctr spec please.

Ta.

Which speed index tyres need to be installed fully depends on the top speed of the car:

P = 93 MPH / 150 km/u
Q = 99 MPH / 160 km/u
S = 112 MPH / 180 km/u
T = 118 MPH / 190 km/u
U = 124 MPH / 200 km/u
H = 130 MPH / 210 km/u
V = 149 MPH / 240 km/u
W = 168 MPH / 270 km/u
Y = 186 MPH / 280 km/u

I know JW, but I can't find the top speed of my car either! 😅

The top speed of a focus MK1.5 with 100 HP 1.6 Zetec SE engine and automatic transmission should be 112 MPH.

Anything above speed index S should be fine.

Seems like whoever came up with that speed index doesn't know the alphabet very well. Unless H is now inbetween U and V? And R is earlier on? (although I suppose P and R can be easily confused).

I don't think it's as simple as selecting the tyre by the speed rating.

As I understand it the tyre has other properties in addition to just being able to cope with high road speed.

The recommended tyre may need some of these other properties, and to achieve them a higher speed rating than you might expect is called up for that purpose.

Just go to a couple of tyre retail sites, put in your car reg. and see what they recommend.

ScaniaPBman.

They would've been H originally.  Though V's are usually cheaper due to larger quantity sold.

If you look for the tyre pressure sticker in the door or fuel cap, that might confirm the speed rating alongside each tyre size.

I have just checked Black Circles and Kwik Fit with my old Mark 1 diesel now scrapped and they both recommend V rating for your 195/60/R15.

That's good enough for me.

As Tom says there's lots to choose from.

Thanks for the replies all. Like Scania, I had an inkling that the rating is not always based on max speed. I rang Ford Parts and though he couldn't find the load index said it shows as V. Or 149 mph speed rating. Very strange that I cannot find it in the handbook or Haynes manual, or online. The filler flap only shows the tyre pressures, not the tyres themselves. Various sites showed my car with different top speeds also. 109 and 115 mph. H should cover that, but it's possible Ford spec'd V.
