Vignale Alloy Wheel 'Peeling'

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody else had had this with their alloys on the Vignale. I forget what they're called.. something like Wet metallic?

Anyway you can see in the photo that one of the alloys has started sort of peeling, its not a result of scuffing and its like the wet look metallic type coating on the alloy is coming off.

I took it to Ford and it turns out it is covered by their warranty and they ordered me a new alloy straight away no questions asked. So i'm not sure if it's maybe a common issue they have.

Apologies for the not very clean wheel, we've just had a lot of snow and rain!

It's a common issue with the lacquer peeling, more common on diamond cut alloys. It's a very well know issue across most car manufactures.

Well done for Ford changing it without a quibble. Normally all we get here is, 'they all do that Sir', and 'No, it's not covered by your warranty'!

Looks like the protruding spokes are getting battered by stones which is allowing water underneath.

If that's the case the others will probably end up the same eventually, not a brilliant design.

My Vignale, after 3 years old, all alloy wheels was fully repainted and laquered, is a common issue with Vignale alloy wheels.

Have the wheels been jet washed by any chance?

I ask because I managed to do very similar damage to this on my MK2.5 alloys.

There's no picture just now but I will try to post one later.

I'm not sure, I bought the car in September and its something I failed to spot until the day I went to pick the car up otherwise I would have had the dealership sort the wheel at the time. I can't complain though seeing as i'm getting a free new wheel out of it 😀

I had a similar experience recently, albeit with kerbing on two of the wheels.  Ford dealership and only 2 years old, high priced car, I couldn't believe it had even reached the forecourt like that (as well as some other faults).  Are we just too picky?  Do most buyers not care about the aesthetics of a nearly new car!?

Well, I've been out in the rain and taken a photo.  190179148_Wheel1.1.thumb.JPG.c4438ba8d68913391b21ae2b7d0305c8.JPG

It's not very clear really but if you look at the centre, the mat surface is where the jet wash ripped off the silver wheel paint.

All done by myself and well out of warranty but it just shows how good the wheel paint is.

Thanks for that, ill definitely probably avoid jet washing the wheels then!

I do only have the problem on the one alloy though which is odd.. Maybe the robot that made it was on half a day at the time..

Yes, I bought this car with just over 5000 miles in September 2020, soon I after noticed a couple of wheels had paint peeling, the size off a 10p coin. I wasn't too concerned at that time but I didn't expect the wheel to deteriorate so much.

The paint looks like chrome but I think it is powder coated, I could be wrong, but if it is powder coated I am fairly sure that it will all have to be removed to recoat. Or if Ford accept any fault then they wil probably provide another wheel/s.

Now one wheel is seriously flaking off and I am sure that it is a manufacturing fault. I always wash my car myself, I don't use a pressure washer just a soft brush and was and wax. Apart from this I am very happy with the car.

Just to give my experience on it. Government sent me my MOT reminder text for my 1st MOT on 2019 Vignale. And it made me think about my wheels, after reading several threads and not initially looking! Inspected them and 3 are showing signs that people have experienced, 1 rear wheel quite bad. And more importantly, my warranty is due to expire on 25th January!

Called my local dealer, Hartwell, and the earliest date they could book me in for an inspection was today! Oh well, at least the claim would be started before the warranty expired. After having it from 08.30 this morning for inspection, they call me at 16.50 to say they had done their inspection and taken photo's to send off to Ford warranty department.

Will have to wait their views on the matter......

But interestingly, when chatting to the guy on the service desk, he said they have had a few Vignale's (different models) with the same issue, and they have all had their wheels replaced. Hopefully they will do the same for me? 🤞

Do they replace with a brand new wheel or with a refurbished one ?  The reason I say that is because a friend had all the wheels replaced on his bmw 520 under warranty due to corrosion around the valves. He said he thought the wheels were refurbished and that his old ones would also be refurbished and end up on someone else’s car.

I don't understand why that would make a difference. Surely, it would have been brand new ones that went faulty in he first place. Whereas refurbished ones would be properly prepared before getting coated again. (admittedly you'd think the new ones would also be properly prepared before getting coated, but obviously not...)

I wasn’t suggesting it was worse, I just wondered.

To be honest I don’t mind either way? Probably prefer refurbished as more chance of them being done to a better standard?

Didn't realise this thread had come back to life!

I have absolutely no idea if it was a new wheel or not, it looked brand new though. Im pretty sure it was as they had to order it in when they could have probably easily just swapped it for another vignale they had on sale at the time

Anyway a year on and the wheel is still looking like new, might go have another look though at the others before my warranty runs out, may aswell make use of it!

After chasing Ford this week after hearing nothing since 21st January, Hartwell have a new set of wheels for me!
