short the two battery terminals to wipe any residual current in capacitors for 30 seconds

I think you should re-phrase that to read "short the two battery cables to wipe any residual charge in capacitors . . . ."

Never a good idea to short battery terminals

Hi All, To try to discount the gem itself as being the fault I sourced a replacement gem module. It has the matching reference numbers but with the higher spec two end letters to give option of adding more features as advised. I am raring to go with my OBDlink EX and forscan extended licence etc. I have already saved the current gem modules AS built data. Is it now just a matter of physically replacing old module with new (with battery disconnected and charge drained) 😀 then writing the saved file to new gem module ?

If you search for posts the guru of all things ford spoke about FUN with these...

I think this is too new, go past a certain date and a bit is MISSING .... I think the idea is the locking IR receiver isn't on the really late GEMs which is OK for much later cars as they do something differently, go back the the one you originally spoke about and thats OK

the last 2 characters on the part number

the first (C) means its a basic unit and only supports a low toy count... but quite late in life with E (as you'd expect on a 2009 car),
CB was fitted to the most basic 2007 cars
FD would be a safe bet supports lots of toys and
FE might be OK,
I think ending with a F misses out on the IR bit you need or maybe the J means the locking IR is missing

Hiya, I had nipped out and replaced the Gem with the  one in pic before seeing your reply. I saved the original AS built data to it and it seems to have worked so far. All the the doors now lock and unlock using the key in driver door. This is fantastic result as doors have been deadlocked for couple months.  The remote locking doesn't do anything though. Is there something I need to do that will reinstate this ?

YES i think the rectangle between R1 and R2 in this picture is the bit that gets the signal from the key fob

ford-focus-fuse-box-diagram-passenger-compartment-2007.jpg

same model year.... I doubt it... what is the part number of the original GEM you took out?

or MAYBE that's the issue you have the wrong bit with no IR and still have no IR

your first post says u have a FORD 75MT- 14A073-CE

C = basic spec
E = 2009

so a JF is NOT the same BUILD year
FD or FE would be my choice

Just found one post saying early ones have an IR by the mirror and later ones have it on the GEM.... but back then an early Focus has a totally different electrical system with a different GEM, so that's no big surprise

on the one I retrofitted, it was from CB to FB

I added another loom that DID have another IR receiver by the mirror but I thought one bit was an alarm motion sensor and the Velcro on the roof liner was the receiver for keyless.... no big deal as it did what I wanted...

added 2 sun visor lights,
rear passenger compartment light with map stuff,
map lights to the front compartment light
Rain Light sensor wires
Auto dim mirror wires
Another bunch of wires to the sensors above the interior light... which i think give motion and ultrasonic alarm features (this plugs in to an empty grey socket half way down the door pillar).  I originally bottled connecting that, as wasn't sure if it would upset the immobiliser....   after 2 years I plugged it in when sorting an upgrade to BT and DAB and I was running the mic wires up the pillar.  Not got round to ticking this box yet (green arrow)

I don't get why you want to fight Forscan... EMLConfig allows you to understand what you need to do

1) Check orange arrow
2) Check green arrow the alarm bit I've not added
3) Second Pic - the pin outs for the top left connector, now you have more pins to connect too

Hi, Thanks for sharing this info that is very enlightening and explains my issue. Yes my old unit was FORD 75MT- 14A073-CE.  I actually removed the newer Gem unit myself on Saturday from breakers yard that's how I know it was definitely taken from a 59 plate focus but the titanium model. Perhaps the previous owner of breakers car had upgraded the Gem to that unit. I had removed a gem with exact same reference numbers to my old one first before seeing that on. I may just nip back in and pick it up. That elmconfig does look very handy. I tried to use elmconfig but guessing it needs a different cable as nothing was happening with my cable. Remember I got the OBDLINK EX  you recommended. Forscan seems very straightforward to use and Ill get use of it.

not tried the EX it should work its a superior cable that should toggle the (clearly built in) switch for you...

a CE wouldn't let you add toys easily

did u put the calibration files in the right place .... and install the run time pack, then sort the cable with the PC, then chose the Focus set up or it won't look like my pictures

I managed to find the no start issue it was the large blue C90 connector. Even though it was locked down as per pic it couldn't have been seated correctly. I took it off again and seen that one of the pins wasn't sitting straight up so tweaked it into line refitted and it back in business.

I'm delighted this mishap happened as whilst trying to resolve it I actually found by total chance what I believe may be the root cause for original central locking fault. It seems to be down to a wiring loom within passenger fuse box. The connection itself is secure but I found  when I twisted the loom it engaged the other locks and they opened. I was actually searching for the ecu at the time and moved that wire out the way and heard the all locks engage. I done it couple times same result. They have locked again and cannot get it to repeat yet but at least I know the solution likely relates to that 3 wire loom. If that hadnt happened I can only imagine this would have been so difficult to be identified.   I will need to work out where the wire goes once it enters engine bay and try to find other end of it. If anyone has any idea please give me a shout

Thank you for these pictures. My fob hadn't worked since I brought my 06 focus, but locked and unlocked on the key. I checked all the fuses and changed the fob battery, no luck, I tried reprogramming the fob, no luck. Saw your pictures and when I disconnected it on my car I found my middle pin had corroded, water must have got in at some point. Managed to reconnect it and now it works perfect. I would upload a pic of it if i knew how lol. Thank you again

It's pretty simple. When you respond to a post, you'll see a paperclip icon below the text box, and the words, 'choose files...'. Click on the words, choose file, and use your devices explore window to navigate to the picture you want to upload. When you upload it, you'll see the thumbnail when done, then click on the picture thumbnail and it will embed into your reply...
