2016 Ford Focus cranking weak?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone. So I have a 2016 Ford Focus. Only had it about a year and last weak I noticed it was cranking weaker than normal. Everything seemed normal once I got it cranked tho. And yesterday I went to go to work and it wouldn't crank at all. A little ticking from the engine and the lights came on but then went off and my screen showed battery saving mode or something. My fiance got it to crank after 3 or so times tho without jumping it. Once cranked it ran fine...taking it today to get checked out but it struggles to crank every time now. What could the issue be? Battery, altenator? Thanks! Just looking for some extra input or ideas on what it could be.

Sounds like a simple new battery needed.

Might well be the battery, but judging by the hundreds of posts where the BMS or unwanted high currents are draining the battery, the battery itself is the last thing I'd suspect. Get somebody to check the whole system out before wasting money on a new battery if it's not needed. Try resetting the BMS to start with, one of two methods shown below :

The Battery Monitor Sensor can also be reset manually by using the following
steps:
• Switch on the ignition.
• Press the high beam switch five times by pulling and releasing.
• Press and release the brake pedal three times.
• If the steps were successful, the warning indicator of the battery charging system in the
IPC (instrument panel cluster) flashes three times within the next 15 s.
If the sequence is interrupted by pressing other keys or pedals for any reason, repeat the
above steps, starting from the beginning.

If the BMS reset procedure described above does not work, follow the procedure
below (within 10 s):

• Switch on the ignition.
• Press the rear fog light switch five times.
• Press the hazard flasher switch three times.
• If the steps were successful, the warning indicator of the battery charging system in the
IPC (instrument panel cluster) flashes three times within the next 15 s.
