Clunking On Braking

Featured Replies

Hi anyone any ideas, my 2003 fiesta is making a clunking noise when i press the brakes , as i press the brake it makes a clunk noise ( like metal ) and stops as normal , drives smooth quiet , no noises , its just when i bbrake, i have took the 2 front tyres of and the pads have plenty of wear on them and they are all secure etc

thanks in advance

if the calipers are tight and everything looks ok at the brakes, it could be a rubber bush thats worn allowing play, check all the bushes on suspension, antiroll bar ect.

Your pads' backing plates may be a bit free to rattle in the calipers, momentarily, when the brake pedal is first pressed, which is a lot better than having tight pads, causing uneven pad wear, by stopping the caliper from floating sideways. I would be quite happy to know that my calipers were operating properly, as I have to have them worked on once a year to keep them free, as it is not part of a normal service. Road grit/salt in our region is excessive, and commonly makes these single-piston calipers stop floating. It costs an hour's labour, now that I am too old to tackle the work myself, simple tho' it is. Fiesta pads, however are held very securely by strong spring-wires, and look a right bu**er to work on.
