Fiesta diesel fuel leak - what is this part?

Featured Replies

2015 Fiesta Diesel 1.5tdci, 68k miles.  I could smell diesel so had a look. found diesel dripping from this round silver metal thing behind top of engine. See pics. What is this thing?  it is in the fuel pipe between the fuel filter and the high pressure diesel pump I think. It does not have any wires going to it. It's not dripping from where the pipes go on, the fuel is leaking out the circular crimped flange.   so questions are a) what is it called,  b) what does it do,  c) what's the method for getting the pipes off it, do they need heating or something, or is this going to be extra annoying where I have to buy the part with a set of pipes.    Please let me know, thanks.

Yes I know this sounds like a complete bodge, but worth a try? If I go round the circular part (where the flange is crimped over) with emery cloth and then put loads of Araldite or similar on it.  Can anyone recommend the best product for this? I am thinking some two pack epoxy glue.  By doing this the most I have to lose is the cost of the Araldite. I do not know how much pressure the fuel is under. This is on the pipe before the fuel gets to the high pressure mechanical pump. The fuel oozes out slowly when the engine is running. Not huge amount but enough to notice the smell if I wind the window down and pull up at a car park barrier etc. It drips on the black plastic inlet thing beneath it.

What does this thing do, if I removed it and just joined the pipes what would happen - I am not going to just try it if I don't understand what the part does / reason it is there.

You don't seem to be having to much luck with the 1.5 compared to the 1.6.  Don't make 'em like they used to...

I don't actually know what that is. It looks like some sort of archaic vacuum diaphragm.  Guessing @iantt hasn't seen this thread as he must know.

If you do just want to seal it, I reckon chemical metal would work better there than araldite.

I've successfully repaired a petrol fuel tank with fibreglass before and fibreglass resin would be my choice to temporally seal that.

The biggest problem will be getting it clean and stopping the seepage because it is Diesel.

thanks for replies. hoping iantt replies - I have just sent him message - I don't normally send messages to specific people as I don't like to hassle people. Of course I would rather do the job properly (replace it) . but it might not be easy or cheap. will let everyone know what happens as it's all helpful stuff for anyone else with same problem. Perhaps I am the first of thousands who will have same leaking part eventually, but hope it's a one off.

Hi, it looks like a damper to smooth out the fuel flow to the pump. Good luck getting it sealed. I would ring your local ford dealer and ask how much for a new pipe first. They are hard plastic pipes so you won't be able to join the pipes successfully together.

2nd hand one on eBay £42 . So imagine new will be double that.

Thanks Ian. There’s a Ford dealer close to where I work, perhaps I’ll pop in and show them pic of the part on my phone. I would imagine it might be tricky on the phone to describe it and make sure it’s the right thing. I’m partly put off getting it on eBay 2nd hand as it needs to be meticulously clean or injectors could be damaged as it fits into the system after the filter.

update: I tried sealing it with araldite as I had some araldite.   I managed to twist the part up horizontal with something wedged beneath it (need to do this as araldite runs off). used emery cloth to roughen it up and a sharp screwdriver to scratch it a lot in the grove to give a key for the araldite. left at least 24 hours (I think about 36)  to set before using the car. so in 3 weeks and about 500 miles it appeared to have not leaked at all until I checked it again today and it felt damp with diesel (smelling my hand shows it is diesel fuel on it). It doesn't look like it has dripped yet so leaking less than before but once diesel has got between the araldite and metal I would expect it to get worse.

I went to ford dealer a few days ago as I reckoned it would leak in time. I did not have car with me. I showed the bloke the photo of the part. he didn't know what it was. he could not find a parts diagram which showed it, but he reckoned if I ordered the fuel pipe for £150 it would have part part on it even though it's not in the pic. I would have to pay first then they would order it in. Thinking this is a bit expensive and not actually having any confidence I was going to get my part correctly I declined.

So I have bought this on ebay which says it's off a Kuga but it seems to be the same to me (I have carefully compared pic to my car). Hopeful it will be as it's same 1.5tdci euro 6 engine (although mine is lower bhp):  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254805096706

I also found this on ebay in USA https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201647249931?hash=item2ef31cda0b:g:wbgAAOSw-itXseGo   which is the same part (just the metal leaking part without pipes)- same number on it, but as ford seem to fit plastic pipes on it which look like you can't get off and put back on it did not seem practical to buy it (and time factor, recently I bought a motorbike part in USA and it took 5 weeks to get to my house from when it was posted in USA).

So just giving the update in case someone else gets the same problem and finds my posting and wondered what the outcome was. Wonder if I am the only person with this part leaking or if they will all start leaking.
