How do you fix 'black screen' on google maps...

Featured Replies

I am having an issue in FireFox (yes, it's up to date) on displaying google maps. When trying to research a fix, it's often quoted to disable 'hardware accelerator', but I've been into settings, done that, rebooted browser, and makes no difference. Anyone know how to fix? It's definitely FireFox as it works fine with other browsers...

LOL 🤣🤣🤣 You work in IT? Next, you'll be telling me to turn it off and back on again! I have been using computers since windows 3.1, this is not a simple 'clear cache' issue unfortunately. I have tried the obvious cures that often work, but this is specific to FireFox (v91.0.2) , as like I say, other browsers like Chrome, IE, Brave etc work just fine. Obvious workaround is not to use FireFox, but I've been using it for over 20 years. Just would like a fix for such a blatant and obvious fault. Thanks anyway for responding...

Well I've just tried it with mine and even viewed Waterford without a problem. I also use Firefox v91.0.2 64bit, so it would seem to be a settings issue, as you have already worked out.

What anti-virus programmes do you have running, check the firewall settings.

Thanks for the prodding. I have a desktop which duplicates the exact settings on my laptop (the one with the issues). I have just tried my desktop, and have no issue whatsoever with no black screen!! I have also sat my laptop beside the working desktop, and have checked all the settings in FireFox - they are exactly the same. They also use the same antivirus (with same settings), and same firewall (with same settings) . They also have the exact same 2 x 'addons', which have the same settings. I'm at a loss as to what to check next LOL

I've got a similar problem trying to remote view the CCTV system at my daughters stables. Firefox connects no problem but the picture is black the same as what you get on the maps. I've not yet found a way to fix the issue and so have to use good old internet explorer when viewing the cameras.

LOL, I get the feeling that when you do find a solution, it will also solve my problem! Now 20 years ago I would have spent much time & effort on this, but now, I just expect tech to work, and if it doesn't, well, it's a shrug of the shoulders and move on with life. If you do manage a fix, don't forget to post it here!

Sounds like a broken profile. Does it do the same in private mode?

Yes, and it does it on both my laptop, and my desktop...

If you've already tried disabling hardware acceleration, you could try disabling webgl too. In the address bar:

about:config

... accept the message that says don't mess with the settings, then search for

webgl.disabled

...in the filter bar. Set that to true, see if it's any better.

Beyond that, I'm not sure. Maybe just check that all the places you're looking at in maps aren't at night 🙂

Late to this party on this site.

@erictcleric - thanks for that 'lucky guess'
@StephenFord - thanks for posting your issue

Yes, this is an interesting area.  I've been working with PCs since the mid-80s and this particular problem had me flummoxed as he_ _, errrr, heck.  And seriously ***** off.
WebGL - Web Graphic Library, supposed to improve:
rendering high-performance interactive 3D and 2D graphics within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins.
--- For some reason, the WebGL is ENABLED or set to FALSE in the various browsers.
Disabling/Setting it to TRUE does the trick - will have to do another write up, this time on WebGL

That True setting that erictcleric noted, causes the WebGL to be disabled. Not sure why it is enabled if it causes the black screen of darkness.

Maybe it is enabled whenever Firefox is updated.....

But.... after doing this, it does work.

Unfortunately, after going to another site, it goes black on that new site. Have to enable the WebGL again for that page to work.

sheesh, more research now...

This is a bookmark of the cure I found to work, kept it in case a FireFox refresh lost my changes!
