Oil leak, left side

Featured Replies

There is small drips of oil on my drive from my fiesta mk7. I had a look underneath and it's coming from close to the passenger side. Any ideas where it could be coming from And how much it will cost to repair? Iv just bought the car so as you can guess I'm not happy.

Did you buy it from a dealership/ car supermarket place? If so you should have some sort of warranty on your car so I'd recommend taking it back and getting them to look at it.

At a guess I'd say a driveshaft seal but unfortunately it's hard to say without a more in-depth description

What engine?

Could be anything from rear main seal (gearbox out job) to something as simple as a rocker cover gasket.

You need to look from above, the oil will start at its highest point and drip down until it eventually lands on the floor, often giving the false impression it's something low down.

Does the car have a big tray thing under the engine? If it does then the leak could be absolutely anywhere as it can run along the tray before dripping out

If you just got the car and it's been serviced it could be they slopped a bit of oil and its dripping off the engine / chassis - it can happen for a few days unfortunately, or it could be the sump plug or oil filter not tightened / leaking.

Was it serviced before collection? If so, did they do oil and filter change? You can't always tell by looking at the dipstick, oil can look dirty after just a few miles driven. I checked the pollen and air filters when we got our Fiesta, both were brand new which was about the best indicator I could find that the oil had been done.

I'd also check the oil level see if it drops, but don't worry too much if it's a few drops agter you just got the car - unless you get under it with the tray off and a torch it's guesswork.

The garage has taken a look and it's the driveshaft seal. £50 to fix. Said the cars in good order but just needs abit of love. Booked it in.  Thanks for the advice guys.

Good guess by me 😂 glad you got it sorted 👍
