Advice needed re shredded timing tensioner

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2014 1.25 Fiesta Style.

I took my car to my local trusted garage as it was making an awful noise on startup this morning.

They said not to drive it as the timing belt tensioner was obviously faulty and catastrophic engine damage awaited any attempt to drive it.

They replaced the timing belt & water pump and said that the belt was only just over half as wide as it should have been, having shredded itself against the tensioner.

They also said that as the car is on a 2014 plate with 89k on the clock, I should make a claim to Ford as it’s not covered enough miles nor is old enough to require changing by fords replacement schedule.

My question is how do I do this and is their any likelihood of Ford meeting or sharing the cost?

many thanks in advance

Pretty much none unfortunately. The only wiff of hope you'd have is by having a full main dealer service history. They're unlikely to help you out on a 7.5 year old car with almost 90k on the clock. Remember the interval on the 1.2 is only 8 years or 100k miles, so you weren't far off it needing changing anyway.

To be fair, I feel quite lucky that the belt didn’t snap and that the garage were able to sort it all out within hours.

Not clear what happened, was there a load of play on the tensioner bearing which was causing the belt to move sideways?
