What do I look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi all, new here so please be gentle ;).

I'm looking to get a new (to me) 17 plate Fiesta 1.0 Zetec EcoBoost (S/S) 5-Door Hatchback auto. My previous car was a Ford Edge 210PS auto Titanium.

What do I look out for with the Fiesta, is there anything that shouts out 'keep clear'?

Don't know about autos but the 2017 (mk 7.5) 125 st line manual I got in May is great, no complaints I can think of - I don't use eco mode any more (I stopped after 2 weeks) and have not yet had a service but, apart from things specific to my car (I have to get wheels aligned and balanced as over 70mph I get a vibration), there's been no issues I wish someone had warned me about.  Yet!!!!

Sorry I cannot be of more help!!!

Thanks for the input srpocd25, I do keep looking at the ST line, but being an oldfart in my early 60's, I'm after a more comfortable ride rather than the sporty ;).

Also thanks for letting me know that the eco mode can be turned off, thats something I didn't know.

I have a 2017 (April) Ecobost Titanium X Auto.   The auto box is absolutely brilliant.   Check that the pipes to the turbo are silver and not corroded.   I think they should be OK as I think that Ford used a better quality metal in 2017.   I've had two 2017 models as one was stolen and the pipes have been fine on both.

Thanks Bobr, I'll check that out when I view the car.

Incidentally, you may not have an 'eco mode'.   I haven't.   I think it might only apply to Mk 8s.   Depends what month in 2017 the car was made as Mk 8s stared midway in 2017.

I'm not sure when Eco mode was added Bobr, mine's a mk7.5 St line, Feb 2017, so before the Mk8 arrived. I got it for the gearbox, 5 gears as opposed to 6, and the lower tax!

I'm not sure by what criteria Ford decided which models would have Eco mode. It's the button below the Aircon panel, next to stop/start and in front of the gear stick.

Maybe Autos don't have them?  Be interesting if other forum users might know and share?

Autos may be different Stephen.   Mine doesn't have stop start and has six gears.   I don't get the lower tax though and I'd be surprised if an auto got it.   The ST Line is probably slightly different to mine too.

If yours is five gears is it a double clutch box?

I have an early Mk 7.5 brochure somewhere, 2014 I think, and that mentions eco mode on all but the most basic versions. Perhaps it's been removed/added again etc over the years as Ford are prone to do? Though they seem to be doing a lot more removing than adding at the moment!

5 gears on a Mk 7.5 ST-Line would be a manual.

Hiya

Yeah, Eric's correct, mine's straight 5 speed manual.  I just preferred, from the research n reviews I'd read before purchase, the reported ratios and delivery of the 5 speed as opposed to the mk8 6 speed

Many thanks for your input folks, the 17 plate I was going to view today has be sold already - ho hum .

I'm now looking at a 15 plate 65 reg Titanium X 5 speed manual 1.0 ecoboost with 123BHP and this car does indeed have an Eco on/off switch.

When I view it, I'll also check the pipes to the turbo too, thanks for the heads up on that.

Ooh Good Luck, sounds great!

I considered such a model, was wavering between the two, but my current car came up first so I never got to testdrive a Titanium X

You'll get all the bells and whistles with that car, let us know how you get on plz oldbob 🙂👍

2015 was one of the worst years for turbo pipes corroding so be particularly careful on that score.

The pipes when new were a sort of bright silver plated surface. The Ford remedy was to clean the rust off and paint with some special grey paint. I don’t know how well the grey paint lasts, whether it is a more or less permanent protection or if it just lasts long enough to get past the warranty period.

Hi again folks ....... I'm bacckkkkk! .

The 15 plate was a no go, too many problems plus both front alloy wheels were out of shape.

We did however put a deposit down on this... 2016 (66 reg) 1.0 EcoBoost Titanium Navigation 5dr 99 BHP Manual in Bohai Bay Mint  (pale green). 1 owner from new, full Ford S/H and only 7700k miles from new. Should have it on the drive in a couple of days.

Thanks again to all who replied in this thread, you've been more help than you can imagine as I've been completely clueless.

Cheers,

Bob

Hey I am really pleased for you oldbob 😊👍

I bought my 66 plate in May with 12606 on the clock and thought that was a good deal, but you've knocked it out of the park!

You have a great car in a Fiesta, IMO - many years of happy driving sir 🙂

Hi

I have a 2014 '64' 1.0 ecoboost 125 Titanium X. I have had it for just over 4 years and put 15k on it. It hasn't cost me a lot of money but if your titanium has 17" wheels on it be careful as even the slightest touch will kerb them. if the tyre size on yours is 205/40/r17 they do give a comfortable ride but there isn't alot of give in the tyres.

Also keep an eye on fuel economy as the government figure is 65.7mpg but you probably won't get that as I don't (mines averaging 35mpg), stop/start working etc.

Hope this helps

Thanks Stephen,

the car's being delivered to my door tomorrow morning and the turbo pipes are rust free :yahoo:.

Now to get used to a small car again as the past 10 years I've only had the big SUV/Soft4x4 type things, however, what's that saying 'great things...'

Hi Paul,

thanks for the info, from what I've seen the tyres are 16" 195/50/R16? I'll check tomorrow. If I get 35mpg I'll be a little miffed with that as both my much bigger previous cars did the same in town (Lexus RX450h petrol hybrid and Ford Edge Diesel), so finger crossed.

Same size wheels and tyres as mine.   I'll be very surprised if you get less than 40 mpg.   Good news about the turbo pipes.   Wish you luck with the car.

Thanks Bob,

really looking forward to it arriving now albeit with a little trepidation due to it being a lot smaller than what I'm/we're used too. The last 'small' car I had was a K reg 5dr Vauxhall Nova Luxe plus, to say it was a little snug with winter coats on is an understatment lol.

Re: the turbo pipes on yours, did you 'paint' them as a precaution or have you left them as is, the ones on mine are very shiny and have a small black line drawn on going into the rubber pipes - but I'm wondering whether to protect them using the VHT paint as I do live in a high salt air area (coastal).

Good to hear about the 40mpg and tyre size too, any idea what the rating is on them?

I've left the turbo pipes as they were as they are spotless.   I'm pretty sure that Ford changed the composition of the metal in late 2016 early 2017 because of all the complaints they had.   Possibly included more chrome.   The tyres on mine are the original Continentals.   They are hardly worn as the car had only done 4,500 miles when I bought it a year ago.   I was a Motability car driven by an old lady who lives not far from me.   Town and country driving I average 44 mpg in mine.

Thanks for the info Bob, the car I'm getting has done just under 7,700k. If memory serves, the tyres are the same Continentals. Lets hope I get similar mpg from mine with town and country driving.

I'm sure you'll get used to it pretty quickly oldbob - due to the long sloping windscreen it has more of a saloon feel in the front.  It's taken me a while to get perspective when negotiating other cars as I can't see where the bonnet ends haha but its fine spacewise. Not sure it's as comfortable in the back, but I've had no complaints, and we don't need to worry about that anyway do we lol

7700 is nothing, it's pretty much a new car that's been run in for you 😊

I'm still getting fully used to mine and can assess it better overall after services, maintenance etc but I absolutely have no regrets.

I'm hoping your experience is just as good sir 😉

PS:

to say it was a little snug with winter coats on is an understatment lol.

fantastic turn of phrase!gave me a chuckle!  I will be fine with my winter coat in the fiesta, and I'm sure you will too oldbob

I have no doubt I'll get used to it very quickly Stephen, and as for negotiating other cars, isn't that what bumbers are for :biggrin:. Seriously though, the thing me and the missus will have to get used too, is getting down into it as apposed to just sliding our bum cheeks in the higher up cars .

Agreed on the 7700k, its taken me a while looking around for a low low milage one local to me, and as it happens, my local Ford dealer got this one in just i time and at a price I liked  £10.5k (a little high for a 66 plate but the milage won me over) -  as I was about to go Toyota Yaris hybrid .

The thing I'm thinking over now is whether or not to get an extended warranty. The car was first registered Nov 16 so is it worth it?

I'll report back in a month or two on how I'm getting on with it, but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the experience, plus this'll be my first manual box in over 20 years, should be fun right?

Believe me mate, when getting into that Nova with winter coats on, its was a juggle as to who belted up first lol, I'm a big lad, 6' 3", 22 stone and I fill the drivers seat literally and figuratively, my wife is half my size in weight but still moans she's fat - so we'll see who wins the juggle battle this winter .
