Hi all, my 2019 1.5tdci feels like the engine is lumpy/surging when at low revs driving at constant speeds upto 30-35mph, prior to getting the dealer to look at it has anybody else had similar experience thats been resolved.

Not so far. I don't suppose this erratic surging started after a recent trip to fuel up by any chance ?

I only had the car a few months, but its taken me a while to recognise it. I dont fill up with supermarket fuel and I filled up with premium diesel from shell and BP but it still does it

I experience this too on low revs. Ever so slight surging. I also get a bit of an engine rattle when accelerating from low speeds. Only briefly, 2 seconds or so, but very noticeable.  I fuel up at Costco.

My car is booked in this Thursday for checks.

I had this issue when new, software update cured.

Poor quality diesel can also cause this issue

A bit of an update on this.

Took my car in as planned, and went for a run accompanied by a Ford mechanic. As you guessed it, car was fine, no signs or sounds of the surging or power drop. It does tend to be a little random when it occurs.

The mechanic suggested it might be cold start related, so advised me to drop it in one evening and leave it overnight for him to test it first thing in the morning. It was couple of weeks before I had a convenient date to leave it with them, but in the meantime, I felt the issue was getting worse, and at one point, the engine nearly died as I was sitting in the middle of light controlled crossroads. It was only with careful pumping of the accelerator that I kept it going and retained power.

I booked it in the next day for the mechanic to try it from cold. This time, he encountered the same issue when attempting to overtake a bus. Engine runs fine in neutral, can get to full revs. Its only when it is under load that it struggles. He can't immediately diagnose what the issue is, but the dealership felt that it is unsafe to drive, so have kept hold of it until their master technician can look at it, but unfortunately he is currently in isolation due to covid, but due back this week.

However, the car is still under original Ford warranty, so they have provided me with a hire car until they can get it sorted. Fingers crossed it gets sorted this week.

Update:

Picked the car up today after 3 weeks being at the dealership.

To give you some background, when I bought the car at the beginning of July, it was supposed to have had a full service and oil change.  A couple of weeks after I bought it, I connected the car up to the Ford App.  This showed the oil life as being 27%. I checked with the dealership and they confirmed it had been changed. A few weeks later and also when I first noticed the surging and rough sounding engine, I checked the app and it said the oil was at 4%. As I was planning to drive up to the lake district the next day, I decided to just turn up at the dealership and show them the app reading as proof that the oil had not been changed.  When they saw this, a mechanic checked the oil level and found that it was higher than it should be.  Apparently (and forgive me for not understanding the actual process) fuel can be dumped into the oil  during some kind of reflux cycle that the injectors go through.

They changed the oil and filter there and then.

Gradually though, the lumpy driving got worse (as above) so that is when I booked it in again.

On collection today, I was told that after much consultation with Ford HQ, they have replaced the injectors.  The feeling is that the oil issue has somehow damaged the injectors??  I have been asked to keep an eye on the oil life indicator in the app, and if it reduces by more than 10% a month to take it back in.

The car is running great, and feels so much more responsive than previously (although I might be imagining this as I have been running round in a 1.2 petrol C3 hire car 😂)

A further, and Hopefully final update on this.

I had to put the car back in after a few days as the problem reoccurred.

Long story short and after lots of backwards and forwarding with the car since November, the dealership has fitted a new battery, replaced the injectors again (they think the last ones may have been faulty). They reprogrammed the injector software, but only after Ford UK redid some code in the program they where using as it kept erroring.

I picked the car up this morning, no problem with the cold start and everything seems to be running nicely. Fingers crossed it is now finally resolved.
