Hi. My transit mk7 2.4 lwb rwd. Overheated, I stopped and topped up the water and it was ok for a day. It overheated again, obviously losing water somewhere but I couldn't find where. No water is in the oil. So I pulled of the motorway. It started rattle like a looses injector so I turned It of. It will turn over free and easy, but it won't start. Could this be a piston problem or injector problem or something else? How do I check? Is it something I could do, I'm told by for if it's a head gasket problem the engine is caput as they can't be skimmed. Any other ideas and quick easy ways to check would be appreciated. Thank you.

Compression test would be my first check

Thank you. Can I do this myself? Do I need special equipment? What's the procedure. Thing is I'm in Hungary in the countryside with the van. Very difficult to get the job sorted unless you know where you take it who specializes in the problem. No one here I can find will come out or has a unit for diagnosis. I'm a bit stuck.

You'd need a compression tester with a diesel attachment.  They can be bought easily for under £30 in the UK, either from tool shops or eBay etc.  I don't know how easy they would to be to get where you are though.

The procedure is easy for one person, just screw it into the glow plug hole and turn the engine over on the starter to get a reading.  Plenty of YouTube videos on this sort of thing.

You could also get a coolant pressure tester as well.  There are even easier to use, just fill up the coolant then place the tester where the cap would be and pump some pressure in.  That pressure should force water out of any tiny leaks that may not show up at normal pressure.

Obviously both kits cost money but I'm not sure what else you can do if there aren't any mechanics willing to come out and diagnose.

Mick, How did you eventually get this resolved? Appreciate your feedback.
