Wrong reading fuel gauge

There may not be one. It may be just the metalwork being earthed through the chassis. That is why I would run in an earth to a cleaned area of the tank module. If that fixes it, take the module out and clean up both surfaces, assuming  the tank is metal  not plastic.

Could the float arm be on the other side of the fuel gauge or could the rheostat be upside down?

I don't think my instrument cluster is faulty

Very intresting, and how did you come to that conclusion ?

I only ask since you disconnected the sender unit and the gauge stayed the same - so you think the sender unit is faulty.

You have said disconnecting the sender from gauge makes no difference.. Now you tell us it does move. You suggest the float arm is on the wrong side and works upside down. How, exactly? This is not a rational suggestion. Without accurate feedback from you we are wasting our time. This fault has been described before on this forum and I have given a test to be carried out to rule out a bad earth.

I've changed the fuel sender unit and that made no difference

The fuel needle does move, I disconnected the plug under the back seat (4 wires coming from it) and the fuel needle went back to 3/4, I've changed the fuel sender unit and that made no difference

Have you checked the earth continuity?

No, not sure where that is

The test outlined earlier. If that fails, take it to a garage.

Was that the cycle the ignition?

No. Have you a multimeter?

Then you will be out of your depth trying to go further. Either take the car to an auto electrician or carry a reserve can.

I know where I can get one

Not the same thing as knowing how to use one and that in turn is not the same as knowing how to fault find properly with one. You have given it your best shot. I could  probably sort it out in half an hour as I have half a century's fault finding experience so I would know how to test and eliminate red herrings. You will not be so lucky so either take the car to somebody qualified to diagnose the problem or carry a spare can.

Ok, cheers for all the advice

You're welcome. Good luck.
