New engine, no new engine number??

Featured Replies

Hello - looking for some clarification here please 😊

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where was best to post, but I'm happy for it to be moved to a more appropriate one if needs be 😊

Bought a Fiesta 1.1 Zetec 2017 in May this year. First registered Dec 2017, but it's a crossover model with the MK8.

3 months in, the engine gave out a huge blue cloud of smoke - which was determined to be a "catastrophic engine failure" by the franchise I bought it from.

After much to-ing and fro-ing, and us reminding them of The Consumer Rights Act, they agreed to replace the engine "at their cost"

Got the car back after 2 weeks and they sent us (after being asked) the invoice for the new engine, so we could inform the DVLA for V5c purposes ... But..

On looking, we noticed that the invoice actually had the old engine number on it - not the new one.

When we contacted the franchise, they suggested that (and I quote) "Because it was an original Ford engine replaced with a new original Ford engine, under warranty, then no new engine number is necessary"...

That doesn't sit right with us? Is that correct??

Thanks in advance 😊

Interesting one. Don't have a definitive answer in relation to Ford, but I'm pretty sure I recall comments on various makes forums to the effect that brand new factory replacement engines come without a number and have the old engine number applied to them by stamping, plate, or sticker.

reconditioned engine would still have it's original number applied so V5C details would need to be changed.

Yes interesting and like you I don't know, but I think I know man who does - @MasterTechTip might be able to answer this.

New engines usually come blank and the dealer has to stamp them, the engine number should just be part of the VIN anyways if not mistaken which is why it's the same 🤔

Hi guys, Sorry I've not acknowledged your answers sooner, but I've been snowed under at work.

Thankyou very much for your replies. You've all put my mind at rest - the new engine having no number v the reconditioned having its original number actually makes sense to me now.

I'm extremely grateful for you all taking the time to help me out with this.

And "touch wood" all appears to be running well 👍🏻

Thankyou again!
