Safety features!?

I'm not young in age, but does anyone else find these safety features, distracting and dangerous, I was driving home from work, my car started beeping, looked down and in red flashing it said collision assist, just as I needed to look at the road I was trying to see what the beeping and red flashing was, I thought the engine had blown up, didn't see anything so guess it was a glitch, wish I could turn them all off, guess that's the world we live in now.

I assume you’ve already got the collision avoidance sensitivity set to low ?

I will check, I thought I've changed it to the lowest setting, I thought the higher setting was more sensitive?

Mate, I set it 2 years ago! Had no bother since. ‘Low’ is the least sensitive iirc . Someone may correct me here!

Ours is set at the lowest setting but does sometimes go off when a gust of wind blows a leaf in front of the car, usually when its dirty. Keep the radar clean and it shouldn't be an issue.

I cleaned my ‘radar’ when prompted by the app.  Turns out I’ve not got a radar. Got the camera on the windscreen (which I believe does the collision avoidance thing) . The plastic square on the front grille is hollow unless you paid for the convenience pack.

Mmmmmm, I know that the last time it happened was on the work so when I got there I cleaned the square radar with a bit of water and a cloth and it hasn't happened since.

Well I didn't know that, where the camera or sensor is in the windscreen is, fills with condensation in cold conditions, the windscreen clears before that does.

The one time I got an alert to my phone, funnily enough it was freezing cold. But this was a couple of years ago, never happened since. 🤔

Have you got the convenience pack? Adaptive cruise control etc?

No adaptive cruise control so I guess it's a no for the convenience pack too.

I’m pretty sure that means no radar either 🤔

You've been cleaning a bit of plastic!

Yes. Along with the rest of the plastic.

Very strange that the system worked perfectly since it was cleaned though.

Coincidence. I’ve not seen a focus with radar but seen photos .

I got the error message this morning for the first time telling me to clean the radar, I spent most of yesterday afternoon cleaning the car and polishing the windscreen etc.... So I guess it must be condensation where the camera is then. I didn't know either as I also cleaned the plastic box 😁

it said collision assist

and did it help you to have a collision ?

Pre-Collision Assist detects vehicles and pedestrians in the road ahead, or who could cross the vehicle’s path, and warns you of their presence. If you don’t respond, the system automatically applies the brakes. This technology is designed to help reduce the severity of accidents, or help avoid them altogether, and functions at speeds of up to 50 mph.

Well maybe it would be better if it just got on with the job without distracting the driver with pointless notifications.

One thing I have realised - the beep beep beep/flashing screen that happens when I pass close to another vehicle/wall/tuft of grass/wheelie bin on the drive is cancelled by the little press-button to the left and forward of the gearlever ...

Not sure what button that is (my car is automatic with rotary dial - no gearlever). You can turn down the sensitivity of Collision Avoidance in the IC vehicle settings.

That's not Collision Avoidance, it is the Parking Aid sensors. I have Front, Rear and Side sensors on mine and sometimes switch them off temporally when doing slow speed manoeuvring in tight situations, I think they only go off if you are doing less than 5mph.

Maybe you only get that if you have Parking Assist, I'm not sure. The button on my Manual car is next to the Park Assist one.

Yes, this is a weird thing on the Mk4 as it means the parking sensors are tripped in all sorts of 'normal' situations.  In the Golf the front sensors are only activated after selecting reverse then first, or by pressing the button in the centre console.

Yes, the build up of leaves at the kerbside can set mine off at this time of year, especially if my wheels are not completely straight when I set off.

So you turn into a parking space with a wall/hedge/low kerb/another car in front of you and the sensors don't operate unless you remember to switch them on? That's pretty useless IMO.
