High flow air filter.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been looking at swapping my normal air filter for a high flow one.

I’m wondering if it is worth it? I know the performance gain is minimal (that’s not the reason for upgrading) but does it make a difference to the overall health of the engine and fuel economy?
Let me know ☺️
Cheers

Not half as much as getting your charging system repaired.

Nice one, hadn’t thought of that

High flow filters are usually just less restrictive, so will allow more dirt (in theory) into the engine. Unless you plan to modify it further, there's little value in just changing the air filter.

Yeah I’ve just been reading into them a little bit more, people saying about studies where they found they did more bad than good, not going to bother!

I have used K&N filters for quite a number of years, are they worth it? I would say not.As one poster alluded to,they can let in a lot more contaminates, grit etc.Performance gain? Very little if any.Was using one in a GT Mustang,no different whatsoever.Just went back to the OEM filter.

If the manufacturers could get an extra 2bhp from a one litre engine by changing the air filter it would be very cheap power and they would. They don't so there must be a good reason not to. If you can see through an air filter then it is no good, is it?

An exception is the exposed K and N on certain small aircraft engines where the filter has to prevent stones thrown up by propwash from going into the engine whilst also being open enough not to ice up. The engine has to be stripped every 50 hours though!

I've always viewed most of them as pretty much boy racer territory- purely something to separate the eager young chap who doesn't know any better from his money.

might be worth getting a replacement pannel filter if you want a bit more induction noise but performance wont really change

Absolutely, just save your money.Unless you are going down the road of cold induction intakes, don’t bother,
