Automatic transmission grinding noise

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have 2009 Fiesta with automatic 4 speed transmission (4F27E).

I have noticed when I put the gear in Reverse or Drive, there's a metal grinding noise from the transmission sum and it's really loud.

And there was a loud clunking noise when gear was in Drive or Reverse when I cold started yesterday but it went away after a minute or two.

I recorded a video below. Could it be gears inside the transmission grinding or torque convertor issue?

Thank you!

It will not matter what it is. If you were able to fix it yourself, you wouldn't be asking us and that is what is known as an expensive noise. There is a remote possibility of this being a driveshaft which can be checked easily but there is little doubt that the transmission is on the way out. Sorry.

Your automatic gearbox is under going a transformation to a manual single speed box.

Looks like you need it looked at by a garage, probably cheaper to replace with a second hand unit.

Thank you for the reply. I have booked it for transmission service. Hopefully it will be fixed.

Haha, Yeah it sounds like it's transforming into something else. I have booked it for transmission service so hopefully it will get fixed!

You will be too late. The damage has been done.

Have you checked the fluid level?

When was the fluid last changed?

How many miles has the car done?

It doesn't sound very well

The fluid level is in-between max and min and the I don't think the fluid has been changed. the mileage is about 60,000 miles.

It runs okay-ish but the grinding noise is so loud and sometimes I can hear clunking noise as well.

Before you spend £0000s on transmission repairs, change the fluid

I will do that! Thank you 🙂

Then you can spend £0000s on transmission repairs.

Seriously, the automatic transmission  is silent in operation but it contains some very tightly toleranced parts. Watchmakers' tolerances. Once you can hear grinding noises, the entire box is scrap. You need to be thinking of finding either a used transmission or another car. The latter, unless the car you have is in anyway special is probably the better option.
