Engine removal

Featured Replies

Hi all,

sorry to ask this as i have a fiesta mk7 with the 1.4 petrol engine (more or less the same as the 1.25)

the car is scrap so I’m thinking about just using the car to learn a bit more.

I would be grateful if anyone can offer some advise

does anyone have any guides or procedures for removing the engine?  I’m struggling trying to fine a good manual to show the correct process.

thanks.

These are about as good as you will get.

The home mechanic stopped taking engines out of cars back in the 1980's so no real call for manuals to go in to detail on how to replace an engine.

There's no real correct process with such a large job.  Essentially you just need to remove everything connecting the engine to the car (driveshafts, exhaust, wiring loom, coolant pipes, gear cables, etc) and anything else for access (airbox, battery, etc).  Then support the engine on a hoist, remove the engine mounts, and lift it out.

I don’t know if it’s possible on that car, but years ago I got the engine out of a mk1 fiesta by putting the car high up at the front on axle stands  and then lowering the engine down on a trolley jack. I did it this way as I didn’t have a hoist.  Engine reinstalled by the same means. It was difficult though you only need the engine to slip and disaster. Defo need two people. One controlling jack and one steadying the engine. Be careful, crushing your hand with a falling engine would not be pleasant. Of course this needs a proper garage quality large trolley jack.

Think for how it's fitted and it come out in reverse. The MK 7Fiesta has a sub frame. So, drop coolant and air con, remove the rad pack and front crash beam together. Bonnet, lights and scuttle for access. Lift car onto 4 axle stands. remove exhaust. disconnect gear selector. disconnect steering at bottom UJ in car then from under car see if you can remove rack. Remove shocks, brakes and unclip and remove driveshafts.

Then wiring loom connection. Now the best way is to lower the car slightly, position axle stands around the subframe and remove the mounting bolts for that and the rear engine mountings and lift the car up from it with large jacks or similar. or just cut the front off the body and roll it out the front.
