Oil Top-Up Focus 4 2020 diesel

Featured Replies

I never thought I'd end up asking this sort question on an owners forum but here goes ...

What oil do people use in thier Focus 4, diesel, 120ps, 20-reg?

Background - Fords spec is for Magnatec spec WSS-M2C952-A1, or any ACEA C5 oil as long as you don't use more than 1 litre of it between topups. So - easy peasy, just like every other car I've owned over the last 12 years or so, (Mazda, VW, Skoda) I pop into halfords or somewhere, pick up the cans of oil and check for the spec on the back. Nothing. So I try Castrols web site and hey presto! - nothing, can' even get thier search utility to find the correct oil (just emailed them for the second time for advice). Petronas gives the capacity, but no which of theier oils to use. Mobil refers me back to them, and they've emailed me to say its thier "Super™ 3000 Formula OV 0W-20" - which I haven't been able to find!! Oddly, I haven't even benn able to find any 0-20 C5 oil either!!

So I have tried, honest!

It doesn't so far bode well for my doing my own oil changes once the warranty is up, does it😟, let alone carrying a small top-up can in the car.

PS took the car into the dealer this am to have a few warranty issues looked at, and expected to find a parts dept with odds and sods (cans of oil, antifreeze, mats or whatever) stacked up but no such luck, I have to ask at the parts desk in the main showroom where I'll no doubt be presented with a frightfully expensive 1/2 litre container!)

Well, Castrol replied PDQ this time with the message

"For your vehicle ‘Ford Focus, MK IV, 1.5 EcoBlue 2020’ manufacturer recommends the usage of engine oils with approval to ‘Ford M2C952-A1’ with SAE 0W-20 viscosity. The right fitting Engine oils which has the approval and can be an excellent choice are ‘Castrol MAGNATEC DIESEL 0W-20’ oil from our retail range and ‘FORD-CASTROL MAGNATEC 0W-20 Diesel’ oil which is available in Ford workshops."

So a quick google revealed its presence on ebay - much as I hate to do so, I've just ordered a top-up can from there! It also found it on Castrols web site, which thier own search engine failed to do. Ho hum.

I buy all my oil on line from Arnold Clark who supply 5 litre containers.

Thanks for that Unofix - when the warranty is up (2 years time) I'll stock up from them or the ebay source. Car had an oil/filter change FOC when I bought it last month (about 9.5k miles) and I'll be keeping that up as time goes. (For a 20k oil change car I usually go 12k or 1 year, depending on use). Never have left oil changes until the full term! 5 litres is unusual for Castrol - I switched to Mobil and Petronas to get the full 5 litres for cars with a 4.5 litre oil capacity, though I see the Focus needs over 6 (unless someone tells me that like the Skoda diesel I recently had, the amount at oil change time is less than the full capacity of the engine)

My 2.0 diesel Focus seems to just need the full 5 litres even with a filter change, I guess not all the oil drains out.

I use Opie Oils very fast delivery and good packages.

Hi @F0CUE just checked out Opie Oils, but for some reason they have no oil available for a Focus Mk4 2.0 Diesel Ecoblue 😟

Sake that is bad it must be a non common type.

Is the Mk4 2litre diesel prone to using oil between servicing ?

Never had the need to top up oil between annual service on the MK4 1.5 diesel or any of the previous 2 focus's either albeit they were both the 1.6tdci versions.

I just did almost 10,000 miles on it's original factory filled oil, and the level was as near full that it would have only needed two teaspoons to fill it back up.

I'm confused as I was under the impression that the 2.0D used 0w30 oil which is WSS-M2C950-A spec.

Arnold Clark advertise 0w20 oil to WSS-M2C950-A spec. https://www.arnoldclarkautoparts.com/products/ford-castrol-magnatec-professional-0w-20-fully-synthetic-engine-oil-5-litre?_pos=1&_sid=e3660263c&_ss=r

Vospers on ebay advertise 0w30 oil to  WSS-M2C950-A spec. Castrol 0W30 Oil 10 LITRE Magnatec Professional 1343831 New! | eBay

Can't believe 2 different thicknesses of oil would be the same standard spec.

I should have said - mine's the 1.5, not the 2 litre

Yes you are correct. The Focus Mk4 2.0 Diesel uses 0w30

Not surre whats happened with Arnold Clark and the 0w20.

And just to confuse things even more, the Gallons quoted are US Gallons, not Imperial Gallons. The capacities quoted for my engine in the handbook are also like this.

0W30 for the 2.0 ltr diesel.  6.3 litres used on my oil change a couple of months ago, but it could be they just took the number out of the handbook so they could charge me for the full amount regardless of what they actually used.

Well, here we are almost 2 years on. Can anyone point to instructions for oil change on the Focus 4 1.5 ecoblue diesel 2020 ?

What do you mean instructions??

Get engine warm, drain oil, change filter, refill oil

Done that a few times eg ...

MX5 : get engine warm, put up on ramps, remove undershiled, remove drain plug, drain oil into receptacle, remove oil filter which is tucked up under gearbox tunnel halfway along car, replace oil filter and tighten to correct torque, replace drain plug with new washer and tighten to correct torque, replace undershield and tighten bolts to correct torque, fill with oil to correct level etc.

Skoda Rapid diesel: get engine warm, remove dipstick, remove oil using vacuum pump, remove some wiring from top front of engine, remove filter cover and filter, suck out residual oil, replace filter + o rings, replace filter cover tighten to correct torque, replace wiring, refill oil

Focus 1.5 tdi ecoblue: ? (plus torque settings of course are required)

It certainly would, howver I don't need the whole manual, just the relevant bits - for e.g. on the MX5 forum someone has posted-up  a few common maintenance and repairs procedures (some of which aren't in my Haynes manual!) and I wondered if anyone had a pointer to similar information for the Focus. My Google ("Other internet browsers are available") has proved fruitless, though that doesn't always mean the info isn't there, just that the keywords don't pick it up! Unfortuantley in these days of online-only I can't pick up a copy of Haynes books in my local Halfords to check if my particular vehicle is covered (my paper copy for the MX5 for example has a couple of add-ons for the MK3 but still has important info missing) Thanks - Richard

Forgot to add - my aging w7 laptop isn't up to the spec that Haynes says I need, and I don't want to have to upgrade my PC just to see how to change the oil on my car!
