loud brake squeal when driving

Featured Replies

have a loud squeal coming from the passenger side front wheel.

occurs when driving, not braking.  Seems to get worse, louder etc, the longer you drive.  if going about 20mph its more of a intermittent rotational squeak.  When brakes warmed up, can be a loud deafening squeal when moving off at low speeds.

did have all brake pads changed over a year ago, and within a week, there was similar squealing, went back to garage and they said the pads hadn't bedded, sound had gone.  But now its back.

took it to a tyre & brake place, no noise when spinning tyres when up on the lift but guy said it looks like a caliper may be binding on the passenger side wheel.  Guy took it for a drive and said he thinks its definitely the caliper binding.    quoted £350 for the one caliper and discs/pads both sizes, £450 for both front calipers.

is he right that such a squeal is caused by caliper binding?  Is the price about right?

Phoned ford who wants £45 plus vat for looking at it, also they charge £350-£450 for a caliper replacement.

any advice appreciated, thanks

Could be a caliper binding. The prices quoted are on the high side.I think I would get a few more quotes👍

Loud high pitched squealing could be brake disk wear indicators, worth getting an independent garage to have a look.

Worst case scenario it may be a stuck/binding caliper which would be round 50-70£ for the part (plus pads , possibly disks & labour)

Best of luck 🙂

even though sound is when driving, not breaking, it could still be pad indicator?

garage with the £350 quote for one caliper plus both sides discs/pads, i though price maybe ok, as checking eurocarparts, the only caliper available are pagid at £90.41 each in the sale

0ne hour labour being generous.Although I fit myself, my garage charges £45 per hour.Do the maths👍

My brothers corsa had something similar sound wise. I could not quite work out why. Caliper seemed free enough. I removed pads, cleaned up pads where they mount in the holder. I put small amount of copper grease where the pads fit in the holder and on back of pads and all fine after that.
