Fiesta Auto with shudder - apparently fragments in transmission fluid means new gearbox

Featured Replies

We have the recurring shudder issue on our 2013 Fiesta (Auto - dual clutch Powershift) from the well documented faulty clutches that Ford fitted to their 2013 Fiesta and Focus models. Took the vehicle into a local dealer here in Perth, WA and they're telling us that fragments in the transmission oil means a new gearbox and that it's nothing to do with the clutch. This is after a different dealer replaced the clutch, reset learned values and updated the tranmission software 2 years ago.

We're heading into our hot summer down here so it's not the ideal time to have wool pulled over your eyes. Is this the dealer trying to pull a fast one? The dealer diagnosis has been passed on to Ford Assist who were keen to listen but not so keen to help out.

My gut feeling is that the fragments they've found are the normal particles you'd expect but if not, that anything more serious could be a knock on from the clutch.

Keen to hear from anyone out there who hase had the same issue or anyone more technically minded (wouldn't be difficult) who can shed some light on this.

Cheers

Hi,

The clutch is dry, so oil has nothing to do with the clutch.

Fragments in oil means something is broken/braking down somewhere. Why do you need a complete new transmission? Surely there's someone out there who specialises in these and can tear down and replace faulty component(s).

How severe are the particles? If it's only minor, change the fluid and move the car on, while it still works👍

Remember to clean the paint from underneath the main battery earth to the body and grease. These boxes are very sensitive to voltage

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

The dealer, Seaview Ford, Clarkson, WA that inspected the shudder has found metal fragments in the transmission oil. They didn't say whether these were the smooth (harmless?) or sharp variety. It's this dealer who said we need a new gearbox fitting.

The car is now with my mechanic (Fiesta is my wife's car) and I've asked him to give your advice re earthing terminals a go, before trying any other fix.

Hopefully we can fix it for less than the $7500 the dealer quoted us.

Cheers

Has it a full service history with Ford?If it has, you might want to contact Ford Australia in Melbourne.Try & get it repaired under goodwill. As you know, these were/are a very troublesome trans.Ford might well come to the party, otherwise as a previous poster said, move the thing on.Good luck.🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺
