Tyre cracks in tread grooves

Featured Replies

I'm concerned about my tyres,  I've spotted cracks between the tread in the grooves

2018 and 17,000 miles, I'm getting them replaced next week. Bridgestone original tyres supplied on car

Guess as the car passed mot  othing to be concerned about but looking on line states non use or just age with UV guess the lockdown maybe

Anyone else had this

Seen similar cracks a couple times when those Bridgestone tyres have been fitted for a few years.

So you think it's normal, or I'm doing right getting them changed

I think it's normal for those tyres, but I wouldn't be happy doing 70 down a motorway with them.

Agreed, I'd be very concerned about going at any sustained high speed on those.

Thanks

Think im happier having new tyres fitted, just in case which I'm getting arranged booked in for next week with my local fitter they've done nearly 18k now & 3 1/2 years old

My wife's fiesta has the same on hers which sailed through mot 2 weeks ago, but again not messing got hers booked in for tomorrow for a new set of boots.

Going to be a costly month but worth it for peace of mine, can't mess about with tyres and brakes I think, probably the lockdown car sitting idle for weeks etc

Very sensible mate!

I think this sort of thing should be raised on mot tests at least as an advisory but nothing mentioned on my wife's only wearing uneven on front insides

I'd certainly change those tyres.    I always change tyres at five years of age irrespective of what mileage they've done.   They're just as important as your brakes.

Some tyres tend to age worse than others. I’ve heard of Avon tyres cracking like that within a couple of years. I’m guessing the compounds these days maybe aren’t suited to the lower mileage drivers, and age becomes the change-point rather than wear.

Or there using different compounds and factoring in lower life than in the past

Though mine are 3 half years old done 18k and 16of that in last 15 months as car done 2k when bought it from dealer guess due to lockdown etc sat about a bit

In my experience cracks like this aren’t all that rare. I usually prise them open with a small screwdriver to see how deep. If  they don’t go as deep as the reinforcement strands then my understanding is that mot wise it is fine. Probably we need a mot tester on here to give his or hers thoughts on the safety and how common this is

Yeah be nice to hear from mot tester also on the thoughts and decision making

Is there one on here though?

I was under the impression cracks were  acceptable unless they reach the ply/cords.

For the price of a new tyre would you want to take a chance?

So my wife's car has nice new boots on it

He showed me the tyres and the cracking was a reasonable cracks but not as deep as I thought imagined

My cars tyres in original post are being replaced on Tuesday so all be good

Manufacturers must be making them with less life in them as tyres I had in past seemed to last a lot longer and never saw a crack

I read somewhere that an ingredient formerly used in tyres to help stop them cracking had been banned because it might cause cancer. Can tyres get cancer? I can't find a source for the information now.

So nice new tyres on my car now

And have to say moved from Bridgestone after this cracking and the new tyres are so much quieter and seem gripper too, could be that old ones had the cracking issue but much much better with the new boots on 🙂

Good to hear- peace of mind (and safety) is priceless.
