Water pump slight play

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a 2007 fiesta zetec s 1.6 petrol. I changed the alternator the other day and have a look at all of the pulleys and noticed that the water pump has very slight lateral play. You can only feel it, you can't see it moving. It's not leaking and it's only about 1 and a half years old. Is this alright? The bearings are nice and smooth with no grinding or anything? It's probably got around 1/8th inch play laterally

Anyone got any ides?

It's normal, they allow movement to compensate for slight misalignment of the devices on the aux belt otherwise everything would need to be installed to within less than 0.2 mm which is not practical.

Time to worry is when it leaks !

So side to side and up and down movement is normal? It moves in and out aswell which I know is normal but the pulley moves left to right and up and down?

Side to side / up and down is not normal, you did not mention this in the original post.

It is normal for there to be a small amount of lateral play on the shaft to allow for misalignment.
