Security Camera-No WiFi

Featured Replies

Any security camera experts in the house?

My 85 year old mum still stays in her home, local housing association, but has dementia which is worsening and recently she 'may' have been getting up between carer visits 7.30 pm and 8am and unlocking her front door. We don't know if she's been wandering or not. Someone thought that maybe a camera linked to my phone would maybe give us peace of mind. She doesn't have internet hence the topic title.

Does anyone know of a security camera preferably with rechargeable batteries that would link to my phone by 4g etc

Getting the internet connected wouldn't be totally out of the question but it would involve getting router set up etc and she's going through a bit of a suspicious phase at the moment and would question why she needs this box in her sitting room.

Weve been after some too but found that the majority that claim to be wireless and wifi actually need connecting to a router first which like your post above we havent one.

We can still connect to our old CCTV cameras at one of our previous houses. Not lived there for over 3 yrs and the new owners never changed the password.

Sorry I can't be of much help.

4G cameras are not cheap, and are not the most reliable either. Then there is the data plan to pay for monthly too, you may be better off getting the internet sorted for her. I know you said she is suspicious but a camera in the hall isn't going to be out of sight either.

You could put a router in any room, just use an extension from the master socket. Set the router up at your own home and then plug it in while your mum is at the toilet or something. Then you can tweak it on your mobile and she would be none the wiser.

The WiFi cameras are much smaller normally too.

Ive got a 6 camera setup at home with a DVR and monitor in the sore cupboard on the landing, the cameras are wired but the DVR box uses a wireless bridge that I added myself.

@Jonro2009yeah, looking at 4g cameras they aren't cheap right enough! 😲

Only phone socket in the house is in the sitting room, it already has the phone and the care alarm plugged in to it, don't know how adding a router would affect things? Router could probably hide under the table though 😀

Positioning of the camera could prove more difficult as there's only one socket in the hall, not really close to the door, but there's ways around that I suppose.

Probably won't need to do it but it's something to think about.

I can see quite a number of uses for that bit of kit. The pressure mat is just been used as a simple switch so could be replaced by just about anything with a normally open contact.

With a bit of thought it could even be used as a 'secret' car alarm to send a message when someone is in the drivers seat.

Absolutely, you could probably modify it so that if the circuit was closed then a kill switch could be activated, the thief would have no idea what was happening.

@Turvey just to answer the other question that you haven't actually asked lol, here is a video regarding the care alarm and modem. It's just 2 mins long and answers a future question.

I wonder if you could connect a pressure sensor to a timed socket, one that works between the hours you are concerned about. Then if the circuit was covered there could be some sort of action initiated that would 'remind' your mum not to open the front door.

I am a Nurse Practitioner and have nursed a lot of people with Dementia and other cognitive impairments, it is a very upsetting time for family and very worrying too. Particularly if the relative has no insight into the condition and feels there is nothing 'wrong', which then leads to conflicts. I hope you get something suitable sorted for your mum so she can stay in her own home as long as possible. Always happy to bounce ideas around with you on here 🙂 not saying i can help but sometimes saying your plan out loud helps.

Is it just me or is there not a video there? 🤔😀

Appreciate the posts @Jonro2009 👍

They have reminded me however that we have a very helpful local resource center that actually mentioned pressure pads etc for exactly this scenario so I may try there before committing to cameras etc

Thanks again everyone but feel free to recommend any products that may help.

You could always try contacting your local OT deparent at the hospital, or ask your GP to refer your mum to the Social Work department. It will probably take a while for a referral though, but doesn't hurt to get the ball rolling, and then if and when the need arises for more input you are already in the system. Better to be known to SW sooner rather than when it's urgent/crisis.
