Mk4 bonnet stuck

Hi all

This is my first post.  On my 1997 Mk4 Fiesta, when pulling the red release lever under the steering wheel to pop my bonnet, nothing happens. The lever seems loose as though the cable has stretched or broken. Is there an easy way to get access to the bonnet catch? I don't mind making a hole in the grille if need be, just not sure if that would help. Many thanks
