Ford Fiesta MK6 Fuel Filter/Pump problem?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Firstly, Happy New Year! My Fiesta is doing my head in lately! Haha.  I've noticed higher fuel consumption, the fuel gauge being erratic (saying 120miles left then next time I start the engine it might say 190miles left for example) and trouble starting.

The trouble starting issue has been around for a while now.  I've ruled out the battery and alternator for certain. Now I'm left with starter and fuel system (I think!).  I've changed the relay for the starter but that didn't seem to make much difference.

When starting the engine it will either not crank, some times slow crank and today and yesterday it would crank then cut out (not sure if it's because its been -1oc the past few days). Sometimes it will start first time and be fine, others start after a few attempts at cranking and then finally, not start at all like this morning.

I noticed that If I fully keep the key pressed in the ignition position it would sometimes start and then cut out once I let the key rest in its ignition position. Likewise with revving the engine.  By keeping the key pressed fully and revving, I eventually managed to get it running. But I must stress, when I do try and turn the engine over, I mostly get no response.  I'm just trying to get the problem solved once and for all.

I'm thinking because of the higher fuel consumption, it mostly like is something wrong with the fuel system (Filter or pump etc.) but I'm a novice and so it really is testing me!

If any of you guys could point in the right direction I would be really appreciative.

Thank you.

J.

Managed to get the car started on the way to and from work after about 5-10mins of trying for both journeys.  I'm wondering if it could be ignition related as if I full turn the key as far as it will go, it will crank the engine as soon as I release the key just a little, it'll cut out.
