mk 3 focus not starting this morning after cold spell.....thought battery??????....but no????

Featured Replies

I tried to start my mk 3 diesel focus this morning but nothing, it had been really cold through night freezing even so thought battery for sure.I replaced the battery and thought sorted, tried to start it and nothing.....!!!!!.....lifted bonnet again as mate says could be starter and there may be a clicking, nothing....only a slight high pitched sound that carried on for a while, does anyone have any idea at all or has gone through the same type of thing i would really appreciate any help at all.

Thanks

Do the dash lights come on as normal? Did you buy brand new battery? How do you know it’s charged?  Have you verified the level of charge in your old and new battery by trying them on another car?   Might just be a fault in the ignition switch/lock.   I had that happen to me on a mk2 Vauxhall cavalier.  It was the last thing I checked.   Which I did by taking plastic shroud off steering column and then bridge the relevant terminals on the switch fixed to the lock. Obviously you need to know from the wire colours which are the two terminals to bridge.

Is it keyless start? If so, try clutch fully to the floor, press the start button briefly. Keep the clutch fully depressed, don't touch the start button and see if it starts after a few seconds.

no its a key start.....2013.

After turning key to start it gives a message ENGINE START PENDING.....?

How long are you turning the key for?  It was super cold this morning so will need glowplugs.  It won't attempt to turn the starter until the plug light goes out.

  • Author

the glow plug goes out after a short time.

  • Author

do you think it will bump?

If it says "engine start pending" that means it is waiting for the glow plugs to warm up. Depress the clutch, turn on ignition (but do not attempt to start), wait for glow plug lights to go out, then start engine whilst keeping clutch pressed. Wait for it to start.

the glow plug light goes out quite quickly??

That's fine. Just make sure the clutch is depressed during the whole procedure. If that still doesn't work, try pressing both clutch and brake.

Might sound like a daft question but is the key turning all the way to the crank position.

Have you checked the starter relay? Just cos you said you heard a high pitched sound the relay may need replaced also check the grounds.

  • Author

Sorry you are right it's R10 on the board I don't think you can just swap them. Somebody else might know if you can.

All relays seem to be working fine.......could it be anything to do with the immobiliser??

Do you have a spare key? The chip for the immobilizer is inside the key.

  • Author

ive tried both keys.....both same

Try disconnecting the battery for 5 mins then try again

Good morning Codrock, I hope you are well.

I was just wondering if you have found a fix for this yet please? Mine actually started doing the same thing as yours the day after. I took it to my local mechanic who plugged it in and couldn't find any faults. He seems to think it is the starter motor, which I am getting changed on Friday. I can update you on the results of mine if you like?

I'm not sure if it is linked, but since this has started happening, I have noticed my stop/start doesn't work either. I tend to turn it off right away though, so this could have been broken for ages!
