1.0 ecoboost 2016 Fiesta - Camshaft Position Sensor

Featured Replies

Hi everybody

My wife has a 2016 (66 plate) Fiesta with a 1L ecoboost engine. Recently the engine light came on so I took to my local garage. They have said it looks like a problem with the camshaft position sensor.

They had it in to change it, but realised that the sensor was located behind the timing belt pulley, and to change it, it looks like you need to remove the timing belt and pulley, which he said is around £800 on these engines to take off and put a new belt on.

Has anyone else had this issue and managed to resolve it without messing with the timing belt? It seems mad to me that you have to do an £800 job to change a £30 part.

Thanks in advance.

Before spending that money I would want to check the fault code myself.   Did they give you a report of the fault codes. Has anyone tried clearing the codes / light.  Did it come back straight away?  Does it drive fine?

Firstly, does your local garage know what to look for? Then there's 2 cams ( inlet and exhaust) 2 sensors so which one? Finally there located on the top of the cam cover held in by 1 bolt for each one. All of a 30 second job to replace if that's what is actually wrong .

isetta - I did see the diagnostic with the code on, however didn't make a note of it. He has cleared it multiple time and it comes straight back within an hour.

iantt - I have spoken to him again this morning and misheard him, it is the crankshaft sensor, not camshaft sensor. They have had it apart and seen the sensor that needs changing, and it is behind the timing belt pulley, so they abandoned trying to fit it to try and find a way to do it without taking the timing belt off.

Any further advice would be appreciated with it being the crankshaft sensor.

Thanks

Crank sensor isn't any more difficult to replace. Labour time is 0.3hr. so 20mins.

Still only 1 bolt holding it in place. Only other thing to do is line up one of the 2 holes in the crank pulley with the sensor before sliding it out.

Thank you for the reply, sounds logical!

If possible, could I ask where the picture is from, and if there is any procedures available online. I have searched high and low and can't seem to find anything!

There are no other procedures. That image is all that's needed.

I would probably do a video removing it on my partners fiesta but I'm in gran canaria and back home I'm told it's pretty cold!

I have been known to partially dismantle trims and bits with photos for the benefit of forum members occasionally. 😂

Thank you! I will have look at it tonight.

So just the avoidance of doubt, all I need to do is to line up one if the holes in the crank pulley, undo the sensor's bolt, and it should just slide out? Then reverse to insert the new one. no taking belts and pulleys off?

Really appreciate the help!

No problem, hope you are enjoying the warmer weather!, ***** freezing here, especially where I am near Snake Pass.

Yep pretty much. Lining up the hole must be where there's a gap in the ring teeth to slide the sensor out. That's my guess

I've looked at a pulley ( on eBay ) and can't see any thing different to where the pulley hole is. Must just wiggle out .

Hi again. Unfortunately things are not resolved. I finally managed to get the crankshaft sensor changed, light came back on, 2 camshaft sensors changed, light back on. P0017 fault code.

It has been with ford for the past 4 days and they do not know the issue, they say the timing is out but don't know why.

They want £1500 to strip the engine down and do more investigation (I guess with no guarantee of fixing anything!)

Has anyone had this before and can offer another any further checks?

Is it worth going further down repair rabbit hole... or get rid and look for something else? They have offered me 5500 if I part ex it, and could probably get 5000 from we buy any car.

Thanks in advance!

I don’t have one of these engines but I think I read somewhere that these have variable valve timing controlled by oil pressure.  Did I imagine that? Can anyone confirm? So if the light does not come straight back on does that mean the computer sees it as ok until certain revs / conditions occur eg when it thinks the variable valve timing kicks in but for some reason it does not.   Low oil pressure?    Low oil pressure has occurred on many of the 1.0 ecoboost engine resulting in a wrecked engine (debris from rubber timing belt running in oil blocks the oil intake strainer)

Hi , did you resolve this issue as we have the same problem. I have had the timing belt replaced 2 X now. Fairly confident that the last time they did a good job. The crankshaft sensor has been changed, but not the camshaft sensors .
