    Just to provide some closure on this:

    Fitted an eBay sourced replacement front interior light unit and voila! The rear one started working. So in summary: cause of rear unit not working was faulty front unit. Likely due to corrosion in circuit board? Potentially caused by excessive moisture in car from previous boot leak? Who knows. But it's working now at least
