What type of journeys are you doing to average 50mpg? I rarely do any city driving, it’s B and A roads at 40/60 for 5 miles until a 12 miles motorway journey to work so just trying work out what I can expect. If I could average 50 I’d be happy, any less and I’d be a bit disappointed. If I was to “hyper mile” it could I get it above 60mpg on the motorway? Absolute best I can get out my Audi is 40mpg, coasting wherever possible and sitting at 55/60 on the motorway. Curious as to what the focus would get with the same driving.

I don’t think I’d be ragging a 2 litre diesel in the same way I do my S3 as it’s not quick so I wouldn’t have the temptation to take it to the redline which is only going to help!

My job means I work in lots of different areas, but most of the driving is motorways (M4, M25, M1, M40).

In the summer I tried very hard on a motorway journey of 200 miles to see the best I could get (cruise on 70) and that was 59mpg, never managed to get 60mpg.

Today I did 150 miles motorway with only 4 miles of A roads and averaged 47mpg.

My car doesn't seem as economical as some other people's on here, but it's better than a equivalent petrol motor.

It’s odd that it’s not too economical for a modern diesel. I’m assuming the TC gearbox drops the mpg by about 5-10 on average, but would have expected north of 50 just cruising at 70.

the one I’m looking at has all the extras and a pan roof so a few extra kg which won’t help.

interested to see what it’s like on my test drive.

I know the TC gearboxes aren’t as quick as a dsg, but I’m hoping it’s smoother, especially at low speed. Fuel economy doesn’t look too amazing so I think it’ll boil down to the ride/comfort and whether all the tech on it is any good and warrants a change.

Drove the cars today, didn’t bother with the manual as I could never switch back from an auto.

The 1.5 was good, smooth and averaged 48mpg in a 25 minute test drive.

The 2L was far nicer, it’s much smoother and sounds a lot less “rough” than the smaller engine. It only managed 42mpg sitting at 60mph for the majority of the drive which isn’t amazing. I think I’d probably 43/44 with my driving and journeys.

Really happy with how comfortable it is and how smooth the gearbox is! The 2L had adaptive suspension and it’s really comfortable, but I don’t see the point in sport mode because there’s no power there to play with so it’s a bit pointless in my opinion. Not quick at all, but perfectly fine for getting up to cruising speed with the added torque.

need to decide if it’s worth the hassle of changing and work out how much I’d save by switching.

quick question - both cars had heated steering wheel. The 1.5s was nice and warm. The 2.0 thought was barely even lukewarm. The salesman did drive it for 15 mins before I got in it to top up with fuel. Not sure if it’s because the cabin was up to temp and the wheel turns off to avoid over heating, but it was honestly like there was no heated wheel at all. Don’t think it was the fuse as the light came on and you could feel a very faint warmth, so I don’t know if it’s a fault with the heating elements or what.

does the heated wheel become redundant after 10/15 mins of driving? I can’t see anything online about faults with it. £500 option and if that’s what it feels like it’s a bit of a scam! Can’t think why this happen.

I would love to be able to answer that but I have the Titanium X and it doesn't have a heated steering wheel .

I do have sports mode and with the flappy paddles and it makes a big difference if you really want some extra acceleration.

Think you can expect at least 47mpg round town and at least 54mpg on motorways

I tried the heated wheel on my Vignale recently and was very underwhelmed by it...  Probably the first time it had ever been used too, unless it's tested at the factory.  Heated windscreen also seemed slower to clear mist than in my previous Mk4 so I wondered if the battery was struggling to maintain both together at idle...did you have any other electrical consumers on at the time?

Heated seats were on and were roasting hot. I stuck the heated windscreen on just because, but I did notice at one point a little  bit of steam on the bottom of the windscreen which I would’ve thought wouldn’t happen with the heated screen.

I know they switch off/reduce the current when the cabin gets warm so maybe just that, but if I want warm hands I should be able to have warm hands!

May be a battery issue. Stop start never came on in either car. Only 3.5 yrs old so I’d expect the battery to be fine. Daytime running light was flickering which they’re replacing with a brand new light apparently.

Hmm, it'd take some more investigation to work out whether they were restricted due to load or not then.

The battery charge is probably low if they've been parked up on a forecourt for a while.  I know the stop start threads have become a cliché on here but it worked fine on both my Mk4s, one brand new and the other 2.25 years old.

You'd think that wouldn't you?

My dealership have just replaced the battery on my 3.5 year old Vignale as they try to get to the bottom of my issues of lumpy engine running from cold. They said it had failed their tests.

My original battery only lasted 8 months. The car was stood for 2 weeks when the first wave of Covid struck. Went to start the car and it was dead as a dodo.

Been fine since it's been changed.

I’ve gone for the 1.5 after all that! Car was priced a lot more reasonably and seemed to be in better condition. Only thing it’s missing is the HUD, which wasn’t all that and the adaptive suspension, which I’d never use anyway aside from toggling between eco comfort and comfort, and I didn’t really notice a difference.

Seemed to get better fuel economy out of the 1.5 on the test drive and I don’t really see the £3k difference in the cars worth it, as I’d only get a bit more torque and a HUD, with a questionable heated wheel and quite a few other red flags, didn’t really want to give that dealership my business anyway as they were shocking.

thanks for all the help guys! Should get the car in a week or so…
