MK8 ST vs MK7 ST Longevity

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just wanted a few opinions on the longevity of the MK8 ST engine vs the MK7 ST.

The MK7 ST engine has obviously been proven to last well either in stock form or running some high power figures.

What are all your options on the MK8 ST engine in terms of longevity? Do you think the 3 cylinder will last as well as the 4 cylinder or do you think it will have a shorter lifespan?

Obviously things like using the correct oil, changing the oil at the correct times can affect longevity but for arguments sake, we’ll just base this on correct service intervals, etc.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts. 👍🏼

They are similar capacity and power outputs (if you include overboost on the 1.6), so I wouldn't think either is more stressed than the other at stock power.

The 1.5 has a timing chain, so shouldn't experience the issues the 1.0 with wet-belt can have as it gets older.

The 1.5 also gets dual port and direct injection, so while there is 6 injectors to replace, you have the benefit of the port injectors helping to clean the intake valves.

I'd say if both are maintained as scheduled, the engine itself shouldn't be any different in terms of longevity, the only thing that might be affected is the engine mounts and possibly the DMF in the 3 cylinder could on average go a bit early due to the different vibrations, compared to the 4. That's only a guess and Ford could well have them beefed up to compensate anyway.

Doesn't the 1.6 ecoboost suffer with head gasket failure?

You hear of it a lot in Focus

Yeah I’m glad Ford decided to use a chain instead of a wet belt and dual injection. I also saw a comparison of the rods in the 1.6 and the 1.5. The rods in the 1.6 look far thicker but then again it could depend on the material itself used to make the rod 🤷‍♂️

There is still a small wet belt driving the Oil pump though. I don't know if it can be changed by just dropping the Sump and Oil pump though or if the Chain/Pulley/Crankshaft needs to be removed. Do you have any Idea @iantt?

There's no mention how to remove the oil pump wet belt. Will be an involved job though as it's behind the chain at least. No change interval.

Before 25/02/2019 the oil pump was driven by the balancer shaft. So no wet belt.

Thanks for that and bugger, mine is the later one. I did think that was the case but hoping it wasn't.

I normally keep my cars for over 10 years and maybe in a few years time I'll let the forum know if I find any bits of Belt in my oil.

So presumably the belt is intended to last indefinitely?

Oh for the days when Ford oil pumps were like this and mounted externally with 3 bolts !😀
