Inside? Outside? Hatchback? Estate? 🤔

My bet would be the external trim above the numberplate that's duct taped on to half the Mk2s around here nowadays...

If it is the hatchback number plate lamp/boot open switch trim, I just removed one this week.

Open the boot and remove the two torx screws located inside the hand grip holes. The panel can then be prised off. It is held in place by spring clips that fit into holes on the tailgate inner steel panel.

Once the inner cover is off, unplug the number plate lights and the boot open switch from the tailgate wiring.

Remove the six gold coloured M6 nyloc nuts using a 10mm socket on a screwdriver handle.

There are also two plastic clips holding this trim into place. These are awkward to reach due to their location but can be pushed out with a screwdriver.

The outer plastic trim can then be removed. The sealing foam sticks it into place so it can take quite a pull to get these to release.

Refitting is a reversal of replacement. Each of the clips holding the inner plastic cover on will need to be pushed back into place, then the two torx screws refitted.

It’s 6 nyloc nuts 👍

Seem to remember you need to push out the wiring grommet that sits in the tailgate panel, once the wiring plug is disconnected from inside the tailgate.

Edited and fixed. You are correct that you will also need to remove the wiring grommet.

Brilliant, thanks for the great advice. Worked a treat. The worst job was getting the residue of the duct tape off lol.

Had this happen to our car last year. Still haven't found a suitable replacement; yes, we used duct tape! Previous owner had glued trim back on, but it had gone brittle and dropped off, being held on the car by the wires for the number plate light.

Was that a secondhand Ford part or one of the cheap plastic trims from Eastern Europe or China? Plenty of the plastic ones but don't want to get scammed! New genuine Ford ones are £200+!!!

Hi Gaz. Actually it was from Amazon, it is a cheap copy, but looks fine and does the job. Certainly better than the duct tape lol. The fixing points for the bolts was actually better than the original. Hope that’s helps

Might look for one of those if there’s a version with the keyless button, mines failed and it only comes from Ford as part of the finisher 🙄
