I have a 61 plate ford focus titanium  estate. if I leave a phone charger in the power socket all the time will the car battery drain, or do I have to remove the charger every day

No only if something is charging in it.

Best to unplug it when not in use, the cheap ones especially have a habit of shorting out, I have witnessed it happening a few times.

Never had any bother with that even in the always on MK2. The MK3 turns off after a bit anyways unless using the rear port.

Check to see if the socket turns off after 20 minutes.  Most do, but I'm not sure about your model/year.

The only reason I said that was when I shared a works pool car my partner used to buy cheap chargers for his phone and every now and again you could smell that distinctive electrical burning smell in the morning when you opened the car, needless to say that the charger did not work and sometimes it blew the car fuse.

It happened once when I was in the car and it was like a a cap gun had gone off. I don't know if it could start a fire but I would not take the chance of leaving one in my own unattended car just in case.

There's very probably standby consumption albeit nothing plugged in charging side.
